A controversial old tweet of The Real Housewives of Potomac star Candiace Dillard Bassett resurfaced after she commented on the news of Colton Underwood’s new reality show. The former leading man of The Bachelor franchise came out as gay on Good Morning America, and news of an unscripted Netflix series soon followed. The series will follow Underwood’s life as a newly out-of-the-closet gay man and he will receive help from Olympian Gus Kenworthy. Kenworthy is being labeled as Underwood’s "gay guide."

The Underwood news dominated social media. Fans rejoiced over Underwood living his truth but the news of an instantaneous reality show received criticism. Some believed there was no need for a reality show following an attractive, white gay man when more marginalized members of the LGBTQ+ community deserve the spotlight. The choice of Kenworthy as a "gay guide" was critiqued for the same reason. Dillard Bassett critiqued this choice by tweeting, "okay, gay guide." However, her decision to gatekeep the choices of the LGBTQ+ community prompted an old, controversial tweet to resurface.

“Queenie gay men irk me,” read a tweet of Dillard Bassett’s timestamped from January 2010. Referring to a gay man as "queenie" is certainly offensive. It insinuates that a gay man’s sexuality makes him less of a man than a heterosexual counterpart. Saying that they irk her only perpetuates that stigma. The context of the dated tweet is not clear. Fortunately for the Potomac star, it does not look like she’ll be canceled.

The tweet has been taken in jest by a majority of gay people critiquing the Underwood reality show and has been used as a meme on Twitter. “And she was right!” teased one user on Twitter. Another user Photoshopped the old tweet onto former The Real Housewives of New York star Carole Radziwell after the princess had a poor take on the Underwood news. The old tweet may have a future as a meme on other housewives' Twitter pages.

Filming for season six of The Real Housewives of Potomac is underway. The series has become a housewives’ staple, as its past three seasons have been acclaimed by fans. Coincidentally, those are the three seasons Dillard Bassett has been a cast member. The latest season was best known for the physical altercation between Dillard Bassett and Monique Samuels. Both women took legal action but the charges were dismissed. Samuels announced she was leaving the series shortly after the season five reunion.

Dillard Basset is best known for her constant singing, her knack for drama, and of course, her tense relationship with her mother. It is expected that she’ll bring the same entertaining content to the hit Bravo series when it returns. She will be joined by castmates Karen Huger, Ashley Darby, Robyn Dixon, Gizelle Bryant and Wendy Osefo. A new housewife is also rumored to be joining the cast. The return date of The Real Housewives of Potomac is currently unknown.
