The new trailer for The Real Housewives of Orange County revealed Tuesday that season 14 will air without Vicki Gunvalson as the main Housewife. Vicki has been a featured player since the show’s series premiere in 2006, but the "OG of the OC" appears to have finally lost her orange.
Vicki's lessened role will be downgraded from the main cast to “friend of the Housewives.” Co-stars Tamra Judge, Shannon Beador, Kelly Dodd, Gina Kirschenheiter and Emily Simpson still command top billing, along with newcomer Braunwyn Windham-Burke. Vicki’s reduced involvement may come as a surprise to some, but rumors have persisted about her demotion amongst fans for many months.
In Bravo's cast portrait for season 14 , the absence of Vicki has finally put truth to the rumors. Not one to keep mum about the issue, the television personality took to Instagram, writing a heartfelt post that indicated she harbored no hard feelings about her smaller share of screen time, writing: “For the past 14 years I’ve opened up my life, my loves, my ups and downs on The Real Housewives of Orange County and I am proud to be the ‘OG of the OC.’ I am back again this season right in the middle of the action, and I hope you have as much fun watching the show as I did living it in front of the cameras.” Despite Vicki’s demotion, the trailer itself displays quite a bit of the fun-loving housewife, including a knock-down, drag-out fight between her and Tamra. For the past 14 years I’ve opened up my life, my loves, my ups and downs on The Real Housewives of Orange County and I am proud to be the “OG of the OC”. I am back again this season right in the middle of the action in a different role. I hope you have as much fun watching the show as I did living it in front of the cameras. Stay tuned to Bravo August 6th for more of the Tres Amigas.
While Vicki seemingly holds no ill will about her role on the show, her current fate was apparently a clearly telegraphed warning by Bravo. Back in April, there were rumors that the OC housewife would face repercussions if she did not provide a better storyline for the upcoming season. The source alleged that Bravo executives were hoping that Vicki would get engaged at the end of the season, and her failure to do so would seal her future as a part-time housewife. On April 26, she announced on Instagram that she and Steve had gotten engaged, spurring speculation that Vicki had secured her full-time spot, and had only done so because she promised an engagement. Prior to that, the cast had already begun filming without her. Even so, it is still likely that next season will end with Vicki and Steve’s engagement party. Pictures on social media confirmed that all the housewives were in attendance.
Vicki’s engagement really threw fans off the trail, as the prevailing assumption that she was guaranteed a full-time spot was crushed by the new cast picture and trailer. It will be strange to no longer see the Real Housewives of Orange County mainstay in the opening credits, with her latest tagline being “The fun bus is leaving, and this time I’m in the driver's seat." It seems to fans she almost foreshadowed her fate with her season 13 tagline, however fans believe it's not in Vicki's nature to be riding backseat. A veteran reality star like her didn’t get that way by slumping in the corner in defeat. She may be down, but she’s not out.
The Real Housewives of Orange County premieres August 6 at 9 pm EST on Bravo.
