While The Real Housewives franchise has many different branches already from cities across the country, the newest jewel in the crown is The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. The first season was met positively overall, but there are also many issues with it. Then again, first seasons are always going to be rough in some ways as the show gets its legs under it.

Still, there were some areas where RHOSLC really missed the mark. While season two has already been confirmed, there are some reasons this is deserved and other reasons why it’s not.

Doesn’t Deserve: Meredith and Lisa need to bring it

Meredith Marks from RHOSLC

Meredith and Lisa had their iconic moments in the season, but they also didn’t push far enough. Meredith relied too much on her son Brooks, to bring her drama, and she wouldn’t really “engage” in much.

Her storylines felt particularly fake as she wouldn’t get very real about her relationship issues. And, Lisa, well she can be quite entertaining, also needs to have a rude awakening about how she comes across.

Deserves: There are interesting social and political elements at play

The truth is that every single Real Housewives series has unique social and political issues based on the cast members and the city they live in. Many of these series deal with issues of class and race, but Salt Lake City has a rather interesting added element of religion both the Mormon church as well as Mary's congregation.

This is definitely fascinating and worth exploring, and fans still have a lot of questions.

Doesn’t Deserve: Too many of the cast members are too polished

One of the issues with more current Housewives series is that reality TV has been around for a long time. Many of the cast members have an idea of how to act and how to curate their image, so it becomes more difficult for things to feel authentic.

This was the case in some moments with cast members like Meredith and Lisa who seemed to at times be playing too much into a certain planned persona.

Deserves: Characters like Jen brought the drama

On the other hand, Jen, and others like Whitney, did bring a lot of drama. While Jen could take things too far at times, without her, the season would have been pretty boring. She was clearly going through a lot of things at the time of filming, and she was also one of the only cast members willing to bring their issues to the table.

So, while not everyone liked her all the time, you do have to appreciate that she made the season in many ways, and she definitely was interesting to watch compared to people like Meredith.

Doesn’t Deserve: Contrived drama over real drama that was right there

Whitney Rose from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City

Some of the drama in the first season felt exciting and authentic, but there were also times where interesting things were too glossed over. Instead of focusing on smaller drama like Brooks shaming Jen, there were some interesting things happening behind the scenes of many of the relationships, including Meredith and Seth’s.

It felt like too much was being brushed over and ignored, and this was especially true with Mary.

Deserves: Heather is really well-loved by fans

Heather Gay from The Real Housewives Salt Lake City

While fans have their favorite cast members and they were all fascinating to watch in their own ways, Heather Gay is definitely the breakout star.

She was rather authentic about her struggles, and her arc was one of the best of this pilot season. While she’s not perfect, she did feel more reliable and seem like she genuinely tries to be a kind person.

Doesn’t Deserve: Mary wasn’t even in hardly any scenes

Mary Cosby from RHOSLC

Of all the cast members, one of the most mysterious and mired in controversy is Mary Cosby. Her relationship with her husband, who was previously her step-grandfather, is scandalous and weird. And, there are many questions about the nature of her church and whether or not it’s a cult.

However, Mary was barely in the season at all. She didn’t go to many group events. She might have too many skeletons in her closet for the show, but if they are going to have her as a cast member, she should actually be in scenes. While some of this may have been due to changes in filming, it still seemed strange.

Deserves: There are interesting cast members we want to see more of

One of the main reasons why Real Housewives of Salt Lake City deserves a second season is that it feels like the first season just scratched the surface of what's there. There’s a lot more drama and questions to be explored including the various relationships between the women.

Also, the religious elements and family drama of many cast members is rather poignant and have many fans wanting more. Whether it’s Heather’s journey to leave Mormonism or Jen’s relationship with Sharrieff, there’s a lot of things happening fans want to see more of.

Doesn’t Deserve: Some episodes felt like filler

While there are going to be filler episodes or at least episodes that are a bit less exciting for any reality show, this first season could really drag at times.

While episodes like Sheriff's birthday or the trip to Las Vegas brought the iconic moments, others weren’t as memorable and just seemed very forced. Overall, the season felt a little inconsistent.

Deserves: The reunion episodes were gold

While many fans agree there were some episodes in this season that needed to be better, the reunion episodes were particularly good.

In fact, they were so filled with drama and fights that there were three episodes. Some of the most engaging interactions and arguments happened at the reunion, and it’s clear the year since filming took place changed a lot for these women. Because of this, many people want to see more.
