Sonja Morgan of The Real Housewives of New York City recently shared a tribute to Ivana Trump on her Instagram and fans shared their thoughts. Since Sonja joined RHONY in season 3, she has boasted about her socialite life and her previous marriage to John Adams Morgan, co-founder of Morgan Stanley. Although Sonja and John divorced in 2006, the RHONY star frequently brought up her past and still considered herself a “Morgan.”
During RHONY season 11, cast member Dorinda Medley took the housewives to Ventfort Hall in the Berkshires, which was built for the Morgan family. Dorinda was fascinated by letters preserved from the past to which Sonja had a visceral reaction and screamed, “You don’t touch the f****** Morgan letters!” Another long-running RHONY joke is Sonja’s penchant for name-dropping celebrities. In a previous RHONY season, she claimed to party “all the time” with Madonna and John F. Kennedy Jr. to which Dorinda dryly replied, “Well John John’s dead so that’s difficult.”
In a touching Instagram post, Sonja reflected on her friendship with Ivana Trump, who had recently passed away after a fatal fall in her New York City home. Her tribute read, “Missing you Ivana. You were a wonderful friend to depend on, a role, model, mentor, and inspiration when I needed it through the best of times and adversity.” Sonja went on to praise Ivana for her “warm heart” and for being a mentor to her. However, fans were confused about her hashtag, “lifestyle brand,” which refers to her Sonja by Sonja Morgan line. Reddit user HepcatNat wrote, “Trust Sonja to include #lifestylebrand.” TulipPatch responded, “Lifestylebrand is the best hashtag for a memorial post.”
Many Reddit fans roasted Sonja for her constant name-dropping and questioned how close she was to Ivana. This_itches asked, “So is that Sonja in the photo or did she just take a fan picture from the audience?” An RHONY fan answered, “LOL I believe she’s the one on the left.” Another wrote, “There’s no way.” A Reddit user responded, “Right? And it’s like a terrible photo, and judging by the clothes from about 16 years ago.” An RHONY fan pointed out that if Sonja were indeed close with Ivana, she would have better pictures to choose from than her Instagram post. Many recall moments the RHONY cast would catch Sonja in a white lie, such as the time she claimed she hooked up with a young male model named Dylan.
Despite Sonja’s sometimes suspicious claims, she remains a fan favorite on RHONY. While she was often caught in drama with the other housewives, Sonja was never malicious and often took the brunt of their verbal lashings. Sonja’s fun-loving nature also makes her endearing to RHONY fans and many can’t wait to see her in her Simple Life-themed reality show with Luann de Lesseps. Despite fans doubting Sonja’s relationship with Ivana Trump, many applauded her for the touching tribute and shared their condolences to The Real Housewives of New York City star.
