Reacher star Alan Ritchson reveals which book season 2 will adapt and when filming will begin. Tom Cruise famously played Jack Reacher on the big screen, becoming the first to bring the hero of Lee Child’s novel series to life. But Prime Video's Reacher TV show is actually a more accurate depiction of Child's character according to book fans.

A big part of Reacher the show’s “accuracy” of course is due to star Ritchson, a much more physically imposing and therefore book-accurate Reacher actor than the relatively diminutive Cruise. Ritchson’s depiction of the hulkingly large but also cerebral and morally upstanding Reacher indeed caught on with audiences, turning Prime Video's Reacher into a major streaming hit. And given the success of Reacher season 1, it’s no surprise that Prime Video has already picked up the show for season 2.

Reacher season 1 was of course based on Child’s novel Killing Floor, but Prime Video did not immediately reveal which book would form the basis of season 2. Now the mystery is solved thanks to Ritchson, who just took to Twitter to reveal that Reacher season 2 will adapt Child’s Bad Luck and Trouble, the 11th book in the series. Ritchson also says that season 2 will begin filming in the fall of 2022. See his tweet in the space below:

After adapting Child’s second Jack Reacher novel Killing Floor for season 1, it’s indeed interesting that series creator Rick Santora and company have decided to skip all the way to the 11th book for season 2. Storywise, Bad Luck and Trouble sees Reacher teaming with his private investigator friend Frances Neagley (who of course was played by Maria Sten in Reacher season 1) to solve a mystery involving the death of one of their old Army investigator colleagues. It’s obviously good news for fans of the Neagley character, and Sten herself, that she will be back for season 2. The bad news though is that other Reacher season 1 characters like Roscoe Conklin and Oscar Finlay don’t appear in the Bad Luck and Trouble book and presumably won’t be back for season 2.

Of course Santora himself previously warned fans that many Reacher season 1 characters would not be back for season 2, so none of this should be a surprise. That being said, plans change all the time in TV and there’s still a possibility that a character like Willa Fitzgerald’s Roscoe could somehow be worked into the season 2 storyline, even if that character isn’t part of Bad Luck and Trouble. But no doubt there are Reacher purists who will argue that the books should be followed as faithfully as possible and non-appearing characters should not be shoehorned in just to please TV fans. With Reacher season 2 set to go into production in the fall of 2022, it’s reasonable to guess that the show should premiere on Prime Video some time in 2023.
