An observant Red Dead Redemption 2 player has noticed a clever reference to the game's predecessor. Rockstar Games' open-world Wild West game, which released back in October 2018, acts as a direct prequel to 2010's Red Dead Redemption. The prequel puts players in the role of Arthur Morgan, an outlaw and criminal associate of the first game's protagonist John Marston.

Red Dead Redemption 2 features a huge and richly detailed open world, giving players new things to discover even three years after the title's release. One lucky RDR2 player recently discovered a hidden box that is automatically refilled with money every in-game day. The mysterious lockbox is located near Shady Belle, the player's temporary hideout for one of the game's chapters. Finding the box near a graveyard swamp will let players earn some money and jewelry, and the loot is miraculously refilled every single day to keep players in the money. RDR2's open-world is often unpredictable, however, as one player recently discovered when they were assaulted by a wild deer. The hoofed assailant attacked the player in the middle of a story mission, interrupting a conversation between Arthur and fellow outlaw Sean.

Reddit user Dr_CheeseNut recently discovered dialogue in Red Dead Redemption 2 which directly mirrors a line from the first installment. The in-game conversation has John Marston and Hosea Matthews discussing the future of the Van Der Linde gang. During the conversation, Marston tells Hosea, "People don't forget... nothing gets forgiven." This very same phrase is uttered by Marston to Bonnie MacFarland in Red Dead Redemption, which takes place years after the prequel and stars an older and wiser Marston as the protagonist.

Red Dead Redemption and its prequel form an epic narrative saga which details the decline and eventual death of the American Wild West. While Rockstar Games still supports Red Dead Online through updates and expansions, many fans have already turned their sights towards a potential Red Dead Redemption 3. This hypothetical third installment in the franchise could go in many potential directions, with many fans pushing for the return of stand-out RDR2 characters such as Sadie Adler or Charles Smith. This concept could suit a game that takes place in-between the first two games, or could also feature a story that takes place after the climactic ending of the first title.

Red Dead Redemption 2 features a deep and emotional narrative, which successfully stands alone while also expanding the world established by the first game. John Marston acts as a major bridge between both projects, as RDR2 effectively acts as an origin story for the first game's iconic protagonist. Small details in RDR2, such as Marston's use of its predecessor's "people don't forget" line, help to turn the two separate games into one epic Wild West saga.
