This acclaim was brought about due to some controversial work hours at developer Rockstar’s studio, though, those conditions have reportedly improved since then. Among its compelling, unpredictable narrative, Red Dead Redemption 2 is no stranger to humorous glitches or intentional comedic elements, such as a horse refusing to be a thief’s prize.
More recently, on Reddit, a user named u/grievous-gaming posted a video wherein they accidentally kill Abigail, the wife of John – the protagonist and main player character in the original Red Dead Redemption – during Red Dead Redemption 2’s epilogue. Viewers will notice the method of death is rather anti-climactic, as the player positions their character near a cliff and Abigail simply walks right off the edge as if gravity does not apply to her. Even more curiously, the body of Abigail reportedly disappeared when the player went to investigate her corpse, and she never showed up back at the player's farm. Other Reddit users have replied to the thread depicting their amusement at Abigail’s premature demise. One interesting thought that commenters have expressed is that Abigail has a prerecorded voiceover to portray her falling to death, as if Rockstar anticipated this “accident” could occur. Whether Rockstar planned Abigail’s death in Red Dead Redemption 2 and gave her that recording out of some sense of nefarious comedy, or as a part of some sort of larger abstract conspiracy, is unclear.
The untimely death of an essential NPC – who gamers know lives through this tale from having played the original Red Dead Redemption, the events of which take place after Red Dead Redemption 2 – is an amusing prospect for most gamers who understand the absurdity that often makes its way into Rockstar’s games. Finding gaps in the company’s skillful creations is just as much a pastime for some fans as finishing the main story and hunting for achievements, and everything from the random strings of dialogue to the barbaric and sometimes unpredictable physics of both the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead franchises are littered with moments of hilarity brought about by a lack of realism wedded to fascinating storytelling and ironically immersive, sometimes brutal gameplay. For Red Dead Redemption 2's Abigail, her untimely death is just another in a long line of canon-breaking, but still enjoyable, glitches.
