Razer has finally released its highly anticipated Razer Zephyr face mask. Although it may seems a little late in the pandemic to start introducing a new face mask, that hasn't stopped Razer from adding a little flare to the selection currently available. Unfortunately, for many, adding flare doesn't usually result in a cheap price, as is the case with the new mask.

As things often tend to start out, Project Hazel was initially just a concept. After initially showcasing the concept at CES 2021, the gaming company confirmed its plans to release a "smart" facemask. The idea was to design a facemask that was transparent at the front for social interactions and one that's comfortable enough to wear in a world full of uncomfortable masks made necessary by the presence of COVID-19.

The final product is Razer Zephyr and it is finally available to buy from the company's website. Razer's mask is a little different than what was originally unveiled, although it is still a neat product. Instead of the rumored UV lights and a sound amplifier for clear speech, the actual Zephyr has two filtered fans and an anti-fog coating on the transparent plastic, so that the user's mouth can be clearly seen when the inside is lit up with LEDs. Along with the inner lights, the fan casings on the outside of the mask contain RGB LED rings in true Razer style. Both the fan RPM and LED colors can be adjusted via the Zephyr app or on-device buttons. The seal that makes contact with the user's skin is medical-grade silicone in a bid to provide a secure and comfortable seal, while ensuring only N95-filtered air gets through. Though the Razer Zephyr looks super futuristic and has some cool features that actually contribute to safety, the price is a bit high. The mask alone costs $99.99. Prior to the release of the Zephyr, Razer decided to sell a bundle that included 90 days worth of N95 filters for $150. That deal is already sold out.

Reusable Doesn't Equate To Cheap

For a daily mask that has rechargeable fans built-in, $100 might not sound all that much. Unfortunately, the filters do need to be replaced pretty frequently. According to Razer, each set of N95 filters are only good for three days of use. Once the extra ones that come with the Zephyr mask run out, more can be ordered from Razer at a cost of $30 per pack. Each of those packs comes with ten pairs of filters which, if only used for the specified three days per set, equates to around $30 per month. Over time, that monthly cost will obviously add up. Unfortunately, the market isn't filled with similar mask options just yet.

Price aside, the Razer Zephyr is a pretty cool gadget to have, especially considering it has real practical value. Charged via USB-C, the mask can last up to eight hours with the fans on low speed and the lights off. With the fans on high and the light enabled, the user can expect around 3.5 hours of use. Of course, the mask doesn't need to be charged to effectively filter air, it only makes it a little more comfortable. Overall, the Razer Zephyr is an interesting and useful product that's finally available to buy, but consumers will need to decide whether the cost is worth it to them.
