The day one patch for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart introduces two graphics modes - Performance adds a 60fps option, while Performance RT simultaneously targets ray tracing and 60fps capabilities. These two modes aren't foreign to anyone who's played Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales or Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered on PlayStation 5.

Approximately one month after Miles Morales' launch, Insomniac Games issued an update that added a Performance RT mode to the game's PS5 version. The patch meant players no longer had to choose between smooth 60fps gameplay and ray-traced lighting and reflections. Performance RT opened the door to the best of both worlds, then, thanks to its ability to target both 60fps and ray-traced visuals. Within a few short days, the tech wizards at Insomniac rolled out a similar Performance RT update for Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered. Soon enough, yet another Insomniac-developed title will receive the same treatment.

Over the weekend, Insomniac Games shared details about the day one patch coming to Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Players who download the update will gain access to Performance Mode and Performance RT, both of which will function the way they do in the Spider-Man titles on PS5. As one would expect, the Performance Mode targets a smooth 60 frames per second; meanwhile, Rift Apart's Performance RT capability means players can run the game in 60fps with ray tracing enabled. The studio didn't offer any more specifics, but the following 30-second clip features a glimpse of Performance RT in action:

For now, the unknown quantity is what exactly the Performance RT Mode for Ratchet & Clank will achieve in terms of resolution. Performance RT in Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered, for instance, boasted a resolution that could hit upwards of 1440p, yet was known to dip down to 1080p under certain circumstances. Since Insomniac built Rift Apart from the ground up on PS5, reason suggests it may very well aim a little higher.

This new Ratchet & Clank adventure represents a big departure from previous entries in that players will assume the role of a third playable character - the female Lombax named Rivet. Her introduction into the chaos will even see the titular heroes split up at one point, which should make exploring the franchise's brand-new world all the more intriguing.
