The final, spine-chilling trailer for Netflix's Ratched is out, and it features American Horror Story veteran Sarah Paulson at her terrifying best. Serving as a prequel series to Ken Kesey's 1962 novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and its 1975 film adaptation, the Ryan Murphy psychological-thriller delves into the origins of the saga's tyrannical antagonist, Nurse Mildred Ratched. In 1947 Ratched takes up employment at a leading Californian psychiatric facility. Imposing as a picture-perfect healthcare worker, she infiltrates the asylum and stealthily carries out her own sinister plans.

Netflix's final Ratched trailer focuses on Mildred's time at the Lucia State Hospital. In the trailer, it is revealed, through a voiceover by Paulson, that Mildred was taken away from her parents when she was very little. And this has contributed to her sinister disposition. The Ratched trailer also shed light on the central psychiatric facility's questionable lobotomy experiments, the medical concepts that were a focus in One Flew Over Cuckoo's Nest. It is then questioned if differentiating between feelings by labeling them as right and wrong is synonymous with "playing God." One thing that the final Ratched trailer has made clear is that the show is clearly not for the faint-hearted. The upcoming suspenseful series has its fair share of gory, unsettling moments, which tie in perfectly with its eccentric characters' brutal antics. Sarah Paulson, as the representative halberd of a twisted nurse, is the ultimate showstopper. But she doesn't make the show's other quirky characters, including Sharon Stone's Lenore Osgood, Cynthia Nixon's Gwendolyn Briggs, Judy Davis' Betsy Bucket, and Jon Jon Briones' Dr. Richard Hanover from seeming any less interesting. Viewers are indeed in for a terrifying watch once Ratched premieres next week, on September 18, 2020.
