'Rare Exports' Director to Make 'Home Alone' With Machine Guns

Rare Exports Director to Follow-Up with Home Alone Meets Rambo

The Finnish film Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale is currently sitting so very pretty at 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, it’s even more critically successful than all the other recently released critical darlings, even Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, which sits at 86%.

For those unaware, Exports is the bizarre tale of some Finnish men who accidentally unearth the real Santa Claus, a mythical monster buried deep beneath the earth whose sole purpose is to painfully punish wicked children. Apparently, the film is so strange, stylistic, creative, and conceptually out-there that writer/director Jalmari Helander has already made a name for himself, prompting many a film fan to wonder: What’s next on the agenda?

Helander recently spoke with Total Film about that very topic and said that his next film, an English-speaking film, would basically be Home Alone meets Rambo:

“I’m writing at the moment. […] It will be a totally English language film with a big budget, an action movie. It’s something like Home Alone meets Rambo, it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

When asked if the directorial follow-up would be more family-oriented than Rare Exports, like Home Alone was, Helander said:

“I think it will be quite violent, so no. Like Home Alone with machine guns.”

Say no more, Jalmari Helander – because I’m already onboard! While Home Alone and the numerous Rambo movies were equal parts ‘incredibly enjoyable’ and yet ‘not all that great’ (in my opinion), fusing them as one movie is a surefire way to make the most awe-inspiring cinematic experience of the last two centuries. Move over, Citizen Kane, Casablanca, and Potemkin!

Rambo Plus Home Alone Equals Box Office Gold

Seriously, though, if Rare Exports is as great as A) it looks and B) everyone says it is, then a movie that’s reminiscent of Home Alone with machine guns - from the same director - has my twelve dollar entrance fee already.

Check out the trailer for Rare Exports below:

As for casting ideas, Helander was, unfortunately, tight-lipped:

“Actually, yes, [I have ideas], but I’m not talking about that now. I don’t want to say anything about that, we’ll see what happens.”

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale is in select theaters now. Does Home Alone meets Rambo sound enticing to you? Let us know in the comments.
