The Star Wars universe will greatly expand in the coming years, and among the slate of new programming is Rangers of the New Republic. The spinoff of The Mandalorian was officially announced by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy during Disney's Investor Day 2020. Set in the same time period as Jon Favreau's first Disney+ series, Rangers of the New Republic will connect with fellow titles before forming a "climactic story event."

In Star Wars canon, the New Republic replaced the Empire following the end of the Galactic Civil War. By restoring order, the Republic intended to bring peace and balance throughout the galaxy. The authority's defense forces were reduced as separate sectors carried out their own policing. Aside from crime syndicates preying on vulnerable worlds, Imperial Remnants were still lurking, something the New Republic wasn't fully prepared for.

Despite knowing that the New Republic will eventually collapse during the war against the First Order, there is a lot of the story left untold between the events of The Mandalorian and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Rangers of the New Republic has the chance to fill in some of the gaps by focusing on a tumultuous time within the galaxy.

Lucasfilm announced 10 new Star Wars TV shows in development as part of Disney Investor Day. Among the group was Rangers of the New Republic, which will feature Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni at the helm. Aside from a logo for the upcoming series, not much was revealed about the title, including a possible release date. Considering the Disney announcements were intended to share intel into content coming in the next few years, viewers can certainly expect Rangers of the New Republic sooner rather than later. Based on Lucasfilm's slate, especially for TV, it's likely Disney+ subscribers won't see the series until 2022 at the earliest.

The Mandalorian Stromtroopers and X-wing Pilot

As the case with a release date, Lucasfilm is keeping the plot of Rangers of the New Republic under wraps. That said, the supposedly interweave with the events of The Mandalorian and the fellow upcoming spinoff, Ahsoka. The Mandalorian, of course, is set a few years after the fall of the Empire as the New Republic took control of the galaxy. As seen in Disney+'s first live-action series, Imperial Remnants are still lurking in the Outer Rim, which means the New Republic is facing a much larger threat than they initially believed. Rangers of the New Republic will potentially follow members of the authority maintaining order and investigating threats in the Outer Rim.

Rangers Of The New Republic Cast

Cara Dune and Carson Teva in The Mandalorian Season 2

With the announcement of Rangers of the New Republic serving as a spinoff to The Mandalorian, viewers questioned which familiar faces might be at the front and center of the new series. X-wing pilots Carson Teva and Trapper Wolf have been featured multiple times in The Mandalorian, giving viewers a reason to believe the figures are meant for larger roles in the franchise. Seeing as Wolf is played by Filoni, one of the co-creators of Rangers of the New Republic, the series definitely has the opportunity to feature the X-wing pilot. Another name likely to appear in the series is Gina Carano's Cara Dune. As a Marshal of the New Republic, she could team up with others to serve justice. It's also safe to expect a slew of newcomers featured in the series to fully round out the cast.
