Deadline reports that Hulu has renewed Ramy for season 3, which will run for 10 episodes. The decision arrives just a little over a month after the second season of Ramy premiered on the streaming service, with a bigger promotional push and more widespread critical acclaim than the dramedy’s first year. The sophomore installment delved deeper into the crisis of faith experienced by the titular character, but also broadened the show’s scope by introducing viewers to Sheikh Ali Malik (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Zainab (MaameYaa Boafo).
The speedy renewal makes sense, given the positive response that Ramy has garnered with fans and critics alike. The show has won a Peabody Award, a Golden Globe for Youssef’s lead performance, and it’s been recognized at the SXSW Film Festival. The show has earned praise for its nuanced depiction of Muslims, never allowing one perspective to represent the experience of an entire community.
The best episodes of Ramy at times barely features the main character at all, turning its lens instead to those around him. A striking half hour in Ramy season 1 examined the inner-life of Ramy’s mother, Maysa (Hiam Abbass). This thread was revisited in season 2, which saw Maysa forming an unexpected bond with a non-binary character. It served as an example of the show’s considered, thoughtful storytelling which is all the more laudable for how minorities are often marginalized and stereotyped when depicted on-screen. Ramy has challenged trite narratives, often hilariously. Hopefully, it will continue down that path now that it’s received a renewal.
