The first trailer for veteran director Ridley Scott's ambitious HBO Max sci-fi show Raised By Wolves asks just who the big bad wolf really is. Scott is considered one of the greatest film directors of all time, having helmed several classics in his 40-year-plus career. Blade RunnerAlienGladiator, and The Martian are just a few of the highlights from his directing career. Despite his longevity and the popularity of his movies, Scott has never won an Oscar but has been nominated for Best Director three times.

The 82-year-old doesn't seem to be slowing down any time soon, as he is currently filming The Last Duel, which reunites Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as both stars and screenwriters. Scott has also recently completed post-production on Raised By Wolves, the first TV show he's served as showrunner on in his career. The 10-episode series was initially set to appear on TNT, but will now debut on Warner Media's streaming service, HBO Max. Scott directed the first two episodes while his son Luke directed three.

Today, HBO Max released the first trailer for Raised by Wolves, showing off the scope and ambition of the series. Set in a future when Earth has been destroyed, the show follows a group of humans living a seemingly primitive life on a virgin planet. The twist is that incredibly sophisticated androids raise the children. You can watch the trailer and see the poster for the series below.

The trailer not only shows off the high production budget, complete with detailed CGI setpieces and gorgeous landscapes but also foregrounds the series' impressive main cast. A great deal of screen time is given to Amanda Collin and Abubakar Salim, who play the androids, Mother, and Father, tasked with raising the children. Vikings alum Travis Fimmell also appears, as the seemingly villainous Marcus, a human who encourages the children of the colony to question how they were raised.

Judging by the trailer, Raised By Wolves sees Scott in full sci-fi mode. The themes seem to cover the nature and origin of life, as well as the role played by our belief systems in how we navigate the world, themes Scott has covered in a number of movies, most notably the Alien series. It also includes another of Scott's preoccupations - the concept of artificial intelligence, and how it differs from so-called natural intelligence.

The 10-episode series looks like an intriguing blend of HBO's Westworld and other contemporary sci-fi shows like Dark and The 100, but all shot through with Scott's visually distinctive style. Hopefully, it'll be more Alien and less PrometheusRaised by Wolves will be released on HBO Max on September 3.
