Through any player's time in Frostpunk, they will quickly learn the importance and value of Hope. They will also likely learn how easily Hope is lost, and how that, in turn, can topple a civilization. There are plenty of things within the game that offer Hope, and plenty of things that take it away.

While all decisions have the potential to take Hope away from settlers, there are both permanent and temporary things that give them Hope. These are dependent upon events within the world, and structures. Events that are affected by the player's actions will have a temporary effect, while the structures players build in the society are permanent sources of Hope unless they fail. Here's how to increase settler Hope in Frostpunk.

How to Keep Hopes High in Frostpunk

There are a lot of difficult decisions players will have to make while playing through Frostpunk. Depending on the choices players make, society will be affected in both positive and negative ways. Generally, trying to make the most positive choices will help give the citizens Hope.

To avoid causing citizens to lose hope, players should avoid or limit the following events:

  • The death of a child or adult
  • Controversial law being passed
  • Citizens being frightened
  • Committing a forceful persuasion
  • A broken promise
  • A broken generator
  • Committing to an unpopular decision
  • Having a Watchmen or Cleric beaten
  • An upcoming Storm
  • A triage
  • The Fall of Winterhome
Frostpunk City

Sometimes, even when making the best decisions, players will still incur some smaller negative effects. Luckily, these are all temporary effects that can either be fixed or balanced with karma. To balance morale, players can try one of the activities that provide temporary Hope from the list below:

  • A desirable decision or law being passed
  • Having a child saved
  • Having a ceremonial service
  • Having evening prayers
  • Fulfilling a promise
  • Using propaganda flyers
  • Having a patrol
  • Having a sermon
  • Using public penance

While these activities can all be great to bring back some balance, the real way to win is to overcome negative morale using permanent positive morale. The only real way this can be achieved without constantly completing actions from the temporary Hope modifiers list is to build structures in the society for permanent change. Often, buildings for religious ceremonies or for security work best to permanently increase Hope. Other things that permanently increase a citizen's Hope can include any of the following:

  • Ensuring every child has a shelter
  • Having a Temple
  • Having a regular Morning Gathering
  • Having positive propaganda
  • Having secret informants
  • Working near a Shrine
  • Living near a House of Prayer, Watchtower, or Guard Station
