Wilson played the nerdy assistant regional manager of Dunder Mifflin for all nine seasons and was nominated for three consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his work.

Rainn Wilson’s first-ever TV role was playing homicidal stand-up comic Casey Keegan in a 1997 episode of long-running soap opera One Life To Live. He made his big screen debut shortly after with 1999 cult sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest playing the Thermian alien Lahnk. Throughout the early 2000s, Wilson had parts in several movies including a minor role as Rolling Stone writer David Felton in Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous and a lead role as ill-fated Bill Hudley in Rob Zombie’s directorial debut House Of 1000 Corpses.

Television has proved particularly fruitful for Rainn Wilson throughout his career. He had a recurring role as oddball trainee mortician Arthur Martin on HBO drama Six Feet Under, which earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Drama Ensemble. Wilson also played several characters in the sketch comedy series Tim And Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! and voiced the characters Rattleballs, Sparkle, and Peace Master in the Cartoon Network animation Adventure Time. After The Office came to an end Wilson nabbed the lead in crime comedy-drama Backstrom as its titular detective Everett Backstrom, but the show was cancelled after one season. More recently, Wilson has had recurring roles as intergalactic crook Harry Mudd on Star Trek: Discovery and Bonnie’s therapist Trevor on CBS sitcom Mom, which reunited him with Juno co-star Allison Janney.

Rainn Wilson has lots of film credits to his name too. He starred as aging drummer Robert “Fish” Fishman in the 2008 comedy The Rocker and played delusional would-be superhero Frank Darbo (AKA the Crimson Bolt) in James Gunn’s black comedy Super. Wilson also played grieving widower Paul in indie film Hesher which co-starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman and played PE teacher Wade in the comedy horror Cooties in which an elementary school is overrun by zombified kids. He received raves for his performance as a corrupt lawyer turned bank robber Andy Sikes in neo-noir thriller Shimmer Lake and played villainous tech billionaire Jack Morris in blockbuster The Meg.
