Rainbow Six: Siege may be a multiplayer juggernaut but the series made its name on tactical single-player experiences. A contingent of fans have asked if the game would ever include a campaign of its own, but according to Siege’s Brand Director, the answer is a resounding “no."

It’s been over a decade since a Rainbow Six title had a proper campaign. Excluding the mobile-only Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard, the last instances were the acclaimed Rainbow Six: Vegas games, released in 2006 and 2008. The fact that Siege itself arose from the ashes of the famously canceled Rainbow Six: Patriots adds insult to injury, as the ambitious and somewhat controversial title was centered on a U.S. domestic terrorist group who capture New York City to combat corporate corruption. Patriots’ 2011 reveal garnered much excitement, but Ubisoft canned the project in 2014 after a troubled development cycle.

The thirst for single-player has never fully evaporated, though, and UK outlet Daily Star posed the question of its return to Siege’s Brand Director, Alexandre Remy. To the chagrin of the pro-campaign crowd, Remy bluntly shot down its return. He definitively states that the team’s focus lies solely on building upon and maintaining the game’s successful competitive framework.

"For Siege, forget about a solo campaign. We want this game to be a pure competitive multiplayer experience. All of our resources are going in that direction and to invest those resources elsewhere would be a digression."

Remy elaborates on this point with an interesting analogy. To paraphrase, he says it makes no sense to build a basketball stadium while hosting football games inside of it. Making matters more frustrating for fans is that just this year Ubisoft apparently sent a survey to Siege players asking what new modes they’d like to see in the game. A single-player campaign had been listed among the options, but apparently either feedback wasn't strong enough or Ubisoft doesn't believe it's worth it at this juncture.

Unfortunately, a campaign-focused Rainbow Six game seems a very long ways out. Rainbox Six: Siege's second season of Year 4 is on the horizon instead, with more multiplayer action. The game may potentially migrate to next gen consoles too. As disappointing as this news may be, it’s also tough to blame Ubisoft for sticking with what’s working and wanting to invest 110% of its efforts into it. Fans may have to hold out hope that Splinter Cell fulfills its sort-of prophesied return to scratch that Tom Clancy-flavored narrative itch after all.
