According to Creative Director Leroy Athanassof, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege doesn't need a sequel; rather, the developers will continue to focus on incremental changes that improve the base game. Rainbow Six fans eager for another experience in the brand may be satiated next year with the advent of Rainbow Six: Extraction, a three-player co-op title that distances itself from the generally grounded nature of Siege.

A PvE experience, Rainbow Six: Extraction revolves around an alien threat derived from Siege's limited-time Outbreak event, which took place in 2018 during the Operation Chimera expansion. The next Rainbow Six installment will boast new Operators and a few from the 2015 hit, such as Nomad and Hibana. A number of familiar gameplay mechanics, gadgets, and weapons will also make the jump to Extraction, though developers claim that players who never took a liking to Siege may find something interesting to glom onto in the PvE adventure.

While communicating with fans in a Reddit AMA on the Rainbow6 subreddit, Siege Creative Director Leroy Athanassof explained why Ubisoft Montréal won't pursue a proper follow-up. The Siege of the future shouldn't resemble the Siege of today due to ongoing updates, but the team sees no need for an actual sequel. A Rainbow Six: Siege 2 would necessitate a new game in a different environment, complete with a fresh inventory and possibly another production crew at the helm. In valuing the player's investment, Athanassof said, Ubisoft Montréal plans to treat the current game like a home that simply needs renovations.

"Siege is an evolving game - the Siege of the future will be dramatically different from today's Siege, to the point where we could call it Siege 2. However, as a team, we strongly believe we can bring about these changes in an incremental way, within the current Siege framework.

"Siege 2 would mean a new game, a new environment, probably a new inventory and maybe a new dev team. We do not feel that this is what is needed for the community. We care about your investment in the game, we do not want to move to a new one. Instead, we want to protect your investment and increase its value it by making your current 'home' (which is SIEGE) even better. It’s like renovations to your old house to make it up to date, shiny and appealing."

This isn't the first time Ubisoft has expressed disinterest in a Rainbow Six: Siege sequel. Developers shared a similar sentiment much during a panel at the 2018 Invitational Finals, telling fans there were no plans in place for a Siege 2. Evidently, time has not changes said plans.

Extraction, then, will serve as the all-new Rainbow Six experience that players can hop into for something fresh. Originally slated for a September release across PC and consoles, the PvE title recently received a delay pushing it to January 2022.
