Rainbow Six Siege is getting a new limited time event called Mute Protocol that takes the game in a whole new retro futuristic direction. Developer Ubisoft showed off the next game in the Rainbow Six series - the now unfortunately titled Rainbow Six Quarantine - at E3 2019, but has kept quiet about the title since then.

Battle royale games like Fortnite or Call of Duty: Warzone may get the multiplayer spotlight most of the time, but Rainbow Six Siege still has a dedicated audience of fans who prefer a more hardcore tactical experience. After a rough launch, Ubisoft reworked the title into its current form, and it’s remained popular among multiplayer fans ever since. Even popular enough for Ubisoft to bring it into the next generation, in fact, as earlier this year, the developer revealed that Rainbow Six Siege will be coming to Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and Stadia, but didn’t specify a release date.

For now, Ubisoft is still developing new content for the current-gen version of Rainbow Six Siege, including limited time events that change up the gameplay. In a new video, Ubisoft showed off the next event coming to Rainbow Six Siege: Mute Protocol. Running from August 4th to August 17th, Mute Protocol will transform a familiar map into a new retro futuristic locale and give players some interesting new mechanics to play with. In Mute Protocol, teams will face off to either attack or defend a version of the Tower map covered in neon and chrome. The game’s Operators themselves will also receive new skins for the event, along with special themed movement abilities. Attackers will get the ability to digitize themselves into drones, while Defenders can travel through the Tower’s surveillance network, giving both teams a whole new way to move around the map and evade or ambush enemies.

Along with limited time events like Mute Protocol, Rainbow Six Siege continues to be updated with new Operators and other content. Recent rumors say that Splinter Cell star Sam Fisher could even join Rainbow Six Siege as an Operator in a future update. The famed agent has appeared in other games in the Tom Clancy franchise before, showing up in Ghost Recon Wildlands and Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

Rainbow Six Siege can be a tremendously difficult game to get into, thanks to its difficult tactical gameplay and experienced player base, but the sci-fi aesthetic of Mute Protocol may convince some new or lapsed players to give it a try. Given Ubisoft’s silence on Rainbow Six Quarantine, it may be a while before a new game gives the series a clean entry point.
