Ubisoft has announced the Apocalypse event for Rainbow Six Siege highlighting a new gameplay mode that takes place on the redesigned Outback map. The company is regularly introducing new content to the game, resulting in constantly increasing engagement from players.

At the end of March, the five-year-old R6 Siege title managed to set a new record in concurrent player number on Steam. According to the SteamDB tracking website, the exact figure was 201,053 gamers who were enjoying the tactical shooter simultaneously. This impressive achievement was likely caused by the combination of two factors. First of all, Ubisoft was holding a free R6 Siege weekend back then, encouraging newcomers to give the game a try. Secondly, the record coincided with the launch of Operation Crimson Heist. With the upcoming in-game event, it’s quite plausible that the game will be able to hit yet another eyebrow-raising milestone.

The recently revealed, limited time Apocalypse event for Rainbow Six Siege will take the game 100 years into the future, depicting a nightmarish, devastated world, which is the result of humanity’s irresponsible attitude to the environment. According to the official announcement by Ubisoft, Apocalypse adds a brand new gameplay mode. To fit in the post-apocalyptic setting, the events of the mode will unfold on the specifically redesigned Outback map, where two teams will be fighting over the last plant on Earth. The opposing forces of the conflict are The Keepers and The Warband clans, each consisting of five heavily redesigned R6 Siege Operators. Looking as if they emerged from the Mad Max universe, characters will take either defending or attacking roles on a map where one team is tasked with defusing the plant container while the other is trying to prevent opponents from harming humanity's last hope.

The Apocalypse event starts on May 4th and runs through May 18th. During that time, players will be able to unlock free cosmetic rewards and purchasable doomsday outfits for Operators. If a post-apocalyptic makeover doesn’t sound crazy enough, quite recently, R6 Siege has been treated to an unlikely crossover with the immensely popular Rick & Morty animated series. Smoke and Sledge received bizarre redesigns via cosmetic bundles, turning into Pickle Rick and Gromflomite, respectively. The former was, probably, the best out of the two as Smoke’s bundle even included a Portal Gun attachment.

As Rainbow Six Siege gets older, Ubisoft keeps straying further from the title’s original realistic depiction of tactical warfare. While the core gameplay remains mostly intact, the decorations regularly take unexpected turns, delving deeper into fictional universes and weird settings. Judging by the community reactions from the past, it’s actually the right thing to do. The amazing content diversity is responsible for the game’s longevity, as R6 Siege is confidently stepping further into its 6th year of support. The enduring popularity of the game is the best indicator that Ubisoft has adopted the perfect approach.
