The Image Comics Massive-verse, which kicked off with the fan-favorite and genre-stretching hero Radiant Black, just got more interesting with the announcement of the new title The Dead Lucky. Debuting in August, this new comic title by Melissa Flores and French Carlomagno centers around a hero with amazing powers navigating the joys and sorrows of life as a young adult in the big city.

The Massive-verse is Image Comic's in-house organic superhero multiverse. Introduced with Radiant Black #1 by Kyle Higgins and Marcelo Costa, it is a world that combines the best of American superhero storytelling and comic action with traditional Japanese tokusatsu and sentai hero themes, all with a contemporary Millennial vibe. In this world, heroes are called on to protect and serve while coming to terms with the technology that allows them to be superpowered, as well as the "normal life" issues that are always present when they are not in superhero mode. In addition to Radiant Black, other titles in the Massive-verse have included Supermassive, Rogue Sun and Radiant Red.

According to an announcement by Gizmodo, The Dead Lucky follows the trials and tribulations of a Bibi Lopez-Yang, a veteran who has recently returned from Afghanistan. It was a tour of duty that left Bibi with post-traumatic stress syndrome and an uncanny ability to manipulate electricity. Returning to her hometown of San Francisco after her service, Bibi finds a town different from the one she left. On the one hand, more areas of the city are being overrun and controlled by gangs using advanced tech to overcome normal law enforcement protections and anti-crime efforts. On the other hand, private enterprises such as the Morrow company are taking protection matters into their own hands by deploying super-tech sentinels in areas under its control to protect and serve with a technological iron fist.

With her newfound powers of electricity manipulation and the assistance of a classic sentai mech robot, Bibi hopes to become the perfect balance of community-generated security and kick-ass abilities. This will enable Bibi to protect her neighborhood from criminals, cyber-tech gangs, and techno-corp authoritarianism while developing a cooperative posture with local police. Naturally, this will not come easy for Bibi, considering the vested interests of the parties involved.

The opportunity to introduce Bibiana and The Dead Lucky to the Massive-verse with such fantastic collaborators as French, Mattia, Becca and the Massive-Verse team, is an honor that can’t be understated," said Flores. "When we meet Bibi, she lives between worlds, culturally, physically and mentally. Stricken with survivor’s guilt, she’s untethered; lonely and lost in her past, drifting without purpose. I can’t wait for the world to experience her superhero journey.”

"It was exciting to be able to bring Melissa's characters to life. Readers will quickly realize how complex Bibi is and I'm sure they will love her," Carlomagno added. "Having the opportunity to be co-creator of this series gave me the chance to do exactly the pages I had in mind with complete freedom and that's why it was also great working with Mattia, with whom a fantastic chemistry was immediately born that made the pages even more alive!

Naturally, in keeping with the Massive-verse vibe, The Dead Lucky will also dive into the non-super aspects of life that a Millennial would be expected to experience. These issues include Bibi's PTSD, busted expectations, life failures, and suddenly coming into tremendous power without explanation or guidance. The world of Radiant Black's Massive-verse gets even more exciting when The Dead Lucky #1 goes on sale from Image Comics in August 2022.
