Kiefer Sutherland's new show, Rabbit Hole, is coming this fall to Paramount+. The son of legendary actor Donald Sutherland, Kiefer is the man behind a pair of hit network dramas, Fox's 24 and ABC's Designated Survivor, the latter of which moved to Netflix for its third and final season. While Sutherland is best known for his role as the CTU ( Counter Terrorist Unit) agent Jack Bauer on 24, he more recently starred in Designated Survivor as Thomas Kirkman, the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development who unexpectedly becomes President of the United States.
With those two under his belt, Sutherland is now gearing up for what could be his next big hit. The previously untitled spy-thriller series is from the minds of John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, who directed the pilot episodes of NBC's This is Us and Apple TV+'s WeCrashed. Sutherland stars as a private espionage operative James Weir who takes on the powers that be in a battle for the preservation of democracy in a world plagued with misinformation, behavioral manipulation, and unwarranted surveillance. The eight-episode series was greenlit by CBS studios in May of last year.
Now, during Paramount+'s virtual TCA presentation, it was revealed that Sutherland's new series is titled Rabbit Hole, will start filming soon, and will hit the streaming service this coming fall. Other than Sutherland, Rabbit Hole does not currently have any other confirmed cast members. Considering they have plans to begin production, additional casting news should begin to surface soon.
Interest in seeing Sutherland return to the role of Jack Bauer remains high and with the influx of revivals on network television and streaming services at an all-time high, a 24 reboot remains a strong possibility. Sutherland even recently said he's open to the idea. But rather than returning to an iconic character right now, Sutherland will try to forge a hit from scratch with Rabbit Hole. Though the series shares a title with the 2010 film starring Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart (which itself is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play), Rabbit Hole is an original idea and not based on any existing IP.
Given Sutherland's propensity for making hits out of past thrillers like 24 and Designated Survivor, Rabbit Hole has a good chance of catching on as well. It will be just one of many upcoming shows to attract subscribers to the streaming service, including the highly anticipated Halo series. Rabbit Hole is still very much taking shape, so expect more updates on Sutherland's new project soon.
