John Krasinski says he's open to the idea of A Quiet Place 3, but insists the film isn't happening just yet. The actor formerly known as Jim on The Office has come a long way in the last few years. In addition to carving out a career as an action star in movies like 13 Hours and Amazon's Jack Ryan TV series, Krasinski made a name for himself as a director with his 2018 monster horror-thriller A Quiet Place. The widely-acclaimed film starred Krasinski and Emily Blunt (who are married in real life) as a couple who try to protect and teach their children how to survive in a world that's been overrun by powerful creatures that are blind, yet hunt by using sound.

A Quiet Place was an immediate success at the box office too, which is why Paramount put a sequel into development less than a month after its release. Krasinski eventually committed to writing and directing A Quiet Place 2 in early 2019, with Blunt reprising her role opposite Noah Jupe and Millicent Simmonds as her onscreen children. (Krasinski's character died in the first movie, so he shouldn't be appearing outside of flashbacks and/or dream sequences.) The film is scheduled to open in mid-March and is easily one of the most anticipated movies of the whole year, horror or otherwise.

Speaking to Total Film (via their sister publication, Games Radar), Krasinski revealed he "set up a couple of tiny Easter eggs" in A Quiet Place 2 that "would allow for more mythology" and a third movie. However, he quickly clarified "But, being a Boston Catholic, I can’t be like, ‘Yeah, of course, there’ll be a third!’ No, not at all. I haven’t heard from the studio that they want a third one. But the good news is that the studio and I are on the same page in that this isn’t one of those franchises where we keep pumping them out if they make money". He went on to emphasize he would only make A Quiet Place 3 if he had "an original idea that is really beloved by people", like he did when he pitched the second film.

As Krasinski pointed out, one of many things people liked about the first A Quiet Place was its lack of obvious setup for a sequel. Instead, the movie told a standalone story (one that uses the monster genre to explore the challenges of parenthood) that would've worked just as well as a standalone film as it would the beginning of a larger saga. It sounds like A Quiet Place 2 tries to do the same thing, building on its predecessor's narrative and themes without banking on there being a third chapter. In a time when many (most?) original studio movies are developed with the intention of kicking off a franchise, Krasinski's one-step-at-a-time approach is a refreshing change of pace.

A Quiet Place 2 looks pretty promising so far, with its trailer suggesting the film expands the setting and mythology of the first movie in compelling and possibly even surprising ways. Assuming the sequel lives up to the early hype and becomes a commercial success, it's safe to assume Paramount and Krasinski will (at the very least) discuss the possibility of A Quiet Place 3 at some point. It sounds like Krasinski might even has some ideas about potential directions for the film or, if not that, ideas he would like to explore further. For the time being, though, it's good to know he's more focused on making A Quiet Place 2 as great as it can be first.
