A Quiet Place 2 (2021) takes the Abbotts away from the safety of their farmhouse, which means a whole new set of locations for apocalyptic filming. The new movie picks up immediately after the events of A Quiet Place (2018), taking Evelyn (Emily Blunt), Regan (Millicent Simmonds), Marcus (Noah Jupe), and the baby as they explore post-apocalyptic life without Lee (John Krasinski) and a home. The family encounters their old friend Emmett (Cillian Murphy), who embarks on an adventure outside the confines of their home base steel plant with Regan to search for other survivors.

While obviously taking place on American East Coast farmland and not on a Hollywood lot for most of the first A Quiet Place movie, the sequel adds a lot more locations visited by the A Quiet Place 2 crew. A Quiet Place filmed in 2017 in the upstate New York counties of Dutchess and Ulster for the Abbott farmhouse, with filming on location at Little Falls for the Lee and Marcus waterfall scene and the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail for the scenes remembering Beau. Certain locations such as the pharmacy are reused from the first film, though the majority of A Quiet Place 2 is filmed in brand new locations.

Where the film takes place in the A Quiet Place universe is extremely vague in the first film, with most hints only being the surrounding forests, the appearance of the natural scenery, and supposed vicinity to valleys. Only in A Quiet Place Part II does the picture become more clear; the valleys and distance to the coast are mentioned again, but the map that Regan looks at to show the closest island is the real tell. The map situates the Abbotts near the New York coast, close enough to a small group of islands that group near several other New England states. Along with the implied locations in the movie, here are all of the actual locations where A Quiet Place 2 was filmed.

Abbott Farmhouse

Abbott Family A Quiet Place 2

Though only featured for a few moments in A Quiet Place 2 after the Abbotts decide to abandon it and search for other survivors, their farmhouse and land was the primary location for the plot of the first film. The Abbott home was filmed onsite at an 1880-built farmhouse in the upstate New York village of Pawling. For the first film, the production crew built an entirely new silo that was used both when Regan and Marcus were attacked by a monster and where Lee sits to light his fire.

Baseball Game

One portion of the opening scene that brings the series back to day one of the apocalypse features the Abbotts going to see Marcus play baseball, and is also where Cillian Murphy’s character Emmett is introduced. The baseball game was filmed at the Stenzel Street Field community baseball park in the small town of North Tonawanda, New York. A Quiet Place 2 didn’t change much about the field, though obviously added in an incredible visual display as the town watches the meteor fall across the sky.

Downtown Streets

Some of the most action-packed sequences of the entire film take place in the first 10 minutes when the monsters attack downtown after the baseball game. A Quiet Place 2 then shows Lee and Regan running to their car while Evelyn takes Marcus and Beau back to her car. The ensuing chaos depicts citizens running through the narrow downtown streets, a cop trying to shoot the monster near his car, Evelyn reversing the car as an alien-attacked bus speeds toward her at 40 mph, and Regan and Lee running from the street into a restaurant.

The first time audiences see the downtown area it seems to be small town USA with clean brick buildings, people walking by, and cars parked on the streets. To achieve this New England anytown look, the A Quiet Place 2 crew filmed on Main Street in Akron, New York, an Erie County village near Buffalo. The pharmacy/market that the Abbott family frequents in both films had its exterior filmed along Main Street, though the interior was likely filmed at one of the Buffalo sound stages. It doesn’t appear that the A Quiet Place 2 crew changed much about the street besides cleaning it up and repainting storefronts, so it’s quite authentic to a real small New England town.

Abandoned Steel Plant

A Quiet Place 2 switches out the primary location of the farmhouse in the first film for the abandoned steel plant Emmett lives in. Thankfully for the crew, there was already an abandoned steel plant in upstate New York where A Quiet Place 2 could easily film the exterior scenes. As the Abbotts enter the property of the steel plant, the grass is overgrown, windows are broken, and the entire outside is unkempt. The crew actually didn’t have to change much because the former Bethlehem Steel factory in Lackawanna County, New York had been abandoned since 1983. Not only the main steel factory where Emmett lives, but also the entire area full of railroad tracks, train cars, and formerly functioning buildings that the Abbotts pass by are included on the abandoned 489-acre property.

Abandoned Steel Plant/Radio Studio (Interior)

While the onsite New York abandoned steel plant provided an authentic exterior for A Quiet Place 2’s home base, the interiors in which Evelyn fights (and blows up) a monster and the area in the furnace basement where the family and Emmett actually live were filmed on a soundstage at Buffalo FilmWorks in Buffalo, New York. Most of the interior shots were filmed in studios, which includes one of the final scenes of A Quiet Place 2 where Regan and Emmett blast the monsters on the island with the hearing aid and radio broadcast.

Railroad Station

Towards the beginning of A Quiet Place 2, Regan decides to venture alone to find the island radio broadcasting “Beyond the Sea” by Bobby Darin, and she happens upon an abandoned railroad station where she encounters a few aliens. Similar to the abandoned towns and steel plant, the railroad station is overgrown with grass and plants with windows busted and destroyed train cars. The railroad scenes were filmed at the old railroad depot in the village of Orchard Park, New York, though A Quiet Place 2's railroad station is named “Spring Creek.”

Dock/Harbor

The climactic scene in which Regan and Emmett are attacked by the dock people while trying to find a boat at the pier was filmed at Barcelona Harbor the town of Westfield, New York. Westfield is one of the westernmost coastal towns on Lake Erie in upstate New York, so several of the waterfront scenes are filmed in this town. The harbor is only seen at sunset and dusk, so not much of the nearby scenery aside from the local boats and Lake Erie water are noticeable.

Island Colony

One of the most surprising elements of the new A Quiet Place film is when Regan and Emmett reach the island sending out the radio signal. They happen upon a colony of people yelling, playing, communing, and eating in a quintessential island town that is reminiscent of the Others in the TV show Lost. The island colony was filmed in Dunkirk, New York at the Dunkirk Camp and Conference Center. Considering the colony gave off the sentiment of a family summer camp, it’s not surprising that it was actually filmed at an upstate New York camp that overlooks Lake Erie.

Certain parts of the island colony were again not filmed on an island, but in the village of Olcott on the coast of Lake Ontario. Buffalo News reported that homeowners on Ontario Street, the closest road to the beachfront, were paid $500 each to not mow their lawn for three weeks to give the homes a more apocalyptic look. A Quiet Place 2's set design crew had debris thrown around the street and homes turn their lights off to complete the appearance of an abandoned coastal town.
