A Quiet Place II finally arrives in theaters on May 28, after a year-long delay due to the pandemic. In the aftermath of her husband’s death, Evelyn (Emily Blunt) must venture out in the world anew with her three children in tow.

Emily Blunt spoke to Screen Rant about how the Abbott family deals with their most recent loss, and how the sequel opens the story up.

Evelyn has endured the maximum amount of stress, but she had her husband to confide in. Can you talk to me about her becoming a single mother and having to deal with these circumstances?

Emily Blunt: Sure. The character is so close to me and deeply personal to me. She operates with a sort of biblical ferocity when it comes to protecting her children, and I think that's what I just adore about her as a person. But here she is now, and the stakes have just ratcheted up to exponential degrees: lost her husband, brand new baby, no house; all burned down. Where does she go? What on earth is this person going to do to protect these three children? How far will she go to protect these children? Turns out, it's very far.

But also, I think this film is emotionally even deeper than the first. Because you're dealing with grief, you're dealing with a family who can't put one foot in front of another without feeling in complete peril. That idea that their whole world has just been ripped apart - and the world wasn't really safe in the first place anyway. So, I always just thought that was an undeniable idea; that this family has to venture out now, and the world's going to get bigger; the stakes are going to get higher.

A Quiet Place 2 Teaser Trailer Emily Blunt

There's so many layers to this film, and I think you hit it on the head. My biggest takeaway from this was the loss of a patriarch and how that those lessons were instilled in the family. What were some of your takeaways?

Emily Blunt: From the whole film? I think what I responded to was, in the first film you see how this family has survived this world. But how did the other people survive? And how have they been affected as human beings? I think it's a really big theme and comment on humanity.

Not only do you see the resilience and the recovery of humanity, but you also see that fractured sense of community; that idea of doors and borders closing down; that idea of how far would you go to extend your hand to your neighbor? I think that was a really exciting idea for John, to see how other people have done it.

Rumor has it that you've recently met up with Marvel. I know that this is going to come up a lot.

Emily Blunt: It's not true. Not true.

Well, Sue Storm, obviously. So many fans, the internet's going crazy about it. What are your thoughts on being fan cast as Sue?

Emily Blunt: My whole thing is fan casting is wonderful and flattering. If it's hypothetical and no one's spoken to me about it, then I'm like, "That's nice!" But I don't know what to say.
