The most recent A Quiet Place Part II box office projections have the film's opening weekend topping Godzilla vs. Kong's debut. After enduring an extremely rough 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, exhibitors are hoping to get back on track in 2021. While hybrid release models and shortened theatrical windows appear to be the new industry norm, the box office has seen some encouraging signs over the first handful of months this year. Most notably, blockbuster Godzilla vs. Kong was a major commercial hit, with its worldwide total eclipsing that of 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

As Hollywood progresses into the summer movie season, horror sequel A Quiet Place 2 is giving the industry reason for optimism. Building off the success of the 2018 original and strong word-of-mouth, A Quiet Place 2 is shaping up to be a big box office hit as well. Early ticket sales on Fandango are better now in 2021 than they were prior to the movie's original March 2020 release date before the pandemic. Based on the latest numbers, it could be an even larger draw than Godzilla vs. Kong.

Per Box OfficeA Quiet Place 2 is estimated to gross $42 million domestically in its first three days and $51 million over the extended 4-day Memorial Day weekend. That latter figure would eclipse the $48.1 million domestically Godzilla vs. Kong made in its 5-day Easter weekend debut. This weekend's other big release, Disney's Cruella, is estimated to make $22 million in its first four days.

These projections are in line with the initial A Quiet Place 2 box office predictions from April, which had the film grossing between $30-50 million in its opening weekend. If the film were to reach the high end of these projections, it would be quite an accomplishment, surpassing the original Quiet Place's debut of $50.2 million. The first movie was obviously released well before a global pandemic that completely changed the theatrical landscape. It's also impressive to see A Quiet Place 2 poised to beat Godzilla vs. Kong, suggesting the box office will only grow stronger in the coming months as more people get vaccinated and become comfortable with returning to the multiplex. A Quiet Place 2 likely would have been projected to be an even bigger hit if it came out under normal circumstances, but this is a great start.

A Quiet Place 2's production budget was a modest $61 million, meaning it was never in a position where it had to break pre-pandemic box office records in order to turn a profit. As long as the film doesn't unexpectedly underperform at the box office, it should be in great shape to have a lucrative run and perhaps encourage Paramount to green-light A Quiet Place 3. With A Quiet Place 2 earning positive reviews and facing little direct competition this weekend, it should match these projections at the very least.
