Paramount's monster movie sequel A Quiet Place 2 is projected for a bigger U.S. box office opening weekend than its predecessor. Directed by John Krasinski (who also costarred), A Quiet Place was a surprise smash-hit back in 2018, earning terrific reviews and grossing $341 million worldwide on a $17 million budget. Unsurprisingly, Paramount confirmed A Quiet Place 2 was in development just a few weeks after the original film hit theaters, with Krasinski returning as a writer and director and reprising his role as Lee Abbott (who died in the first movie) in flashbacks only. Based on the sequel's early projections, there's a vey good chance A Quiet Place 3 will eventually come to pass too.

Deadline is reporting A Quiet Place 2 is tracking to open with $60 million in the U.S. during its first weekend of release. That would be a $10 million increase from A Quiet Place's opening two years ago and could potentially put the sequel in the black - or close to it - within its first three days of release. Of course, that will depend on its official budget, which is expected to be higher than A Quiet Place's, though not excessively so.

While a $60 million opening would obviously be disappointing for something like an Avengers or Star Wars movie, it's a great start for a far more modestly-budgeted production like A Quiet Place 2. The monster movie sequel should also benefit from its placement on the 2020 release schedule; Blumhouse's The Invisible Man (which opens this week) will have already done the vast majority of its damage by the time A Quiet Place 2 arrives, so it shouldn't really affect the latter's commercial performance. Similarly, Universal's postponed satirical thriller The Hunt is due to open a week earlier, but it isn't projected to leave much of a dent at the box office. As a result, A Quiet Place 2 will more or less have moviegoers who're in the mood for something on the scarier side all to itself.
