Quentin Tarantino says his Star Trek film will be like Pulp Fiction in space (if it gets made). Tarantino is of course famous for directing films like Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Inglourious BasterdsHis most recent cinematic achievement, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, transports people back to the Golden Age of Hollywood and follows a has-been Television actor in Los Angeles. While Tarantino's films are typically dark and gritty, he may soon go boldly where no man has gone before.

At the end of 2017, it was reported that Tarantino might direct a new Star Trek film for Paramount Pictures. The news came after Tarantino supposedly pitched an idea that both Paramount and producer J.J. Abrams liked. This year, it was revealed that the script for Tarantino's Star Trek movie had already been written by The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith. Soon after, Tarantino revealed that his Star Trek would unsurprisingly be rated-R and full of profanity. Things have been relatively quiet since then, with people more focused on CBS' Star Trek: Picard, but Tarantino has given another update on his movie.

When sitting down with Tarantino to discuss Once Upon a Time in HollywoodDeadline was able to ask for an update about his R-rated Star Trek. When talking about the film getting an R-rating versus a PG-13 rating, Tarantino said, "The thing is, when I talked to JJ about it, it’s not that radical. We’re just not worrying about stuff like that". He then confessed his frustration with Simon Pegg after the actor previously said the film wouldn't be like Pulp Fiction explaining, "If I do it, that’s exactly what it’ll be. It’ll be Pulp Fiction in space. That Pulp Fiction-y aspect, when I read the script, I felt, I have never read a science fiction movie that has this sh*t in it, ever. There’s no science fiction movie that has this in it. And they said, I know, that’s why we want to make it. It’s, at the very least, unique in that regard."

Despite Tarantino commenting that Pegg is out of the loop on his Star Trek plans, Pegg has remained vocal about future Star Trek projects. Pegg previously expressed the belief that his Star Trek co-stars would be back for another film, but that was before Paramount shelved Star Trek 4. Pegg has also talked about Tarantino's film a few times, mentioning last year that he thought Tarantino's Star Trek was at least six years away and that the movie wasn't guaranteed an R-rating.

For years, Tarantino has said he would retire after his 10th film, but he recently suggested that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood might be his final film. Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has gotten positive early reactions, so Tarantino might want to end his career on a high note, but he genuinely seems excited about making an R-rated Star Trek since he is a big fan of the original series starring William Shatner. Only time will tell if his Star Trek film comes to fruition, but a Star Trek movie that is like Pulp Fiction in space could be a wild way to end his career.
