Zoe Saldaña says that a Star Trek film from director Quentin Tarantino would have been a game changer. Saldaña first made an appearance in the world of Star Trek as Nyota Uhura in J.J. Abrams' 2009 reboot of the beloved sci-fi franchise. She then reprised her role in both sequels, Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond. Though for a time it looked like a fourth film in what is now known as the Kelvin Timeline would not be happening, Paramount recently greenlit a new movie with many of the reboot cast returning.

In what may seem like an unexpected turn, rumors have been floating about for quite some time that famed Hollywood director Tarantino had his own Star Trek film in the works. He has been open about the fact that he is a Star Trek fan, though the director himself has never made a franchise film. While it is unknown exactly how long Tarantino has been playing around with the idea of making his own Trek film, it is known that he did approach Paramount through Abrams with his idea, and for a time, it seemed like the studio was quite keen on what he was bringing to the table. However, with the announcement of the fourth Kelvin Timeline film coming without Tarantino's name attached, the chances that his Star Trek film will ever see the light of day seem slim.

During an interview on Jake's Takes to discuss her new film, The Adam Project, Saldaña gives her opinion on the mysterious Tarantino Star Trek film. She admits that she at one point truly thought the movie was going to happen, and goes on to state that it would have been a "gamechanger." Sadly, Saldaña says she never got to read "a page of that script," meaning Tarantino's plot remains a mystery, as does the reason the film never went forward. The Star Trek actor believes it came down to a "scheduling issue," though she cannot confirm this. See her full quote below:

I thought it was going to happen. I was like, 'Oh my god. Gamechanger. If I get to work with Quentin Tarantino on Star Trek,' whatever... I think it was a scheduling issue, but I never got a chance to read a page of that script! I would have loved to, and I just have a feeling that it would have been like a bloodbath. A bloodbath in space!

Both Saldaña and host Jake Hamilton go on to imagine what a Tarantino Star Trek movie would look like. Naturally, both assume that the film would likely end up being pretty violent, as his films hardly ever end any other way, and this might have been controversial with fans. As noted when the initial rumors first broke, the sci-fi franchise is better known for its heady themes than its bloody battles, and it's easy to imagine Tarantino pushing the envelope further than diehards might've been willing to accept.

With the fourth Kelvin Timeline Star Trek film going ahead, it seems Tarantino's Star Trek project has been shelved for now. This does not mean, of course, that fans won't still get to see it someday. The Star Trek universe is currently thriving on Paramount+, and with at least two separate timelines in existence now, it isn't unfathomable to think that Tarantino's version can be worked into the mix someday. However, until then, fans will have to tide themselves over by watching the as yet untitled Star Trek sequel back-to-back with one of the director's movies to imagine the stylistic crossover.
