From drab to fab! Netflix's Queer Eye has dazzled and delighted us for five full seasons of incredible transformations and makeovers. From dads to be, to working moms, to LGBTQ stories, the Fab Five have used their powers to improve the lives of so many. With a focus on all aspects of life Karamo, Bobby, Tan, Antoni, and Jonathan create favorable outcomes out of even the worst stories.
Each new episode of Queer Eye brings so many transformations it's hard to choose the best. The show uses the talent of the Fab Five to showcases themes of personal growth, self-acceptance, and self-confidence. Although all transformations are special in their own way, each season has one defining episode that showcases all three themes, culminating in a truly amazing metamorphosis.
'You Can't Fix Ugly' (Season 1, Episode 1)
Lovely but lonely redneck Tom was the first person in need of the Fab Five's life-changing skills. Describing himself as "a dumb, old country boy from Kentucky," Tom still rented at an apartment at 57 years old and considered himself ugly. Thankfully, the Queer Eye team swooped in to help.
After revamping Tom's messy living space and showing him how to fall in love with his appearance, the Fab Five unleashed the new and improved Tom onto the world. In the end, he found the confidence to pursue his ex-wife once again and the pair bonded over chips and guac in his new outdoor seating area. It was a happily ever after no one anticipated.
'A Decent Proposal ' (Season 2, Episode 2)
Stuck in a serious rut, sweet William was still sleeping in the same that his new girlfriend, Shannon, used with her ex! He sported a scraggly beard and a messy mop of hair, but he wanted a big change in his life that would give him the courage to propose to Shannon.
The boys didn't only help William to change his appearance, they also focused their efforts on planning the perfect proposal. At the end of the week, the outside attention William received managed to change his insides. He used his new confidence and his love of movies to create a spectacular film, with an overarching theme that Shannon is the word for love. He then used it as the backdrop for the sweetest proposal ever.
'Black Girl Magic' (Season 3, Episode 5)
It was almost impossible to pick a memorable transformation from season three, but "Black Girl Magic" had something special. In this episode, we meet Jess, a lovely lumberjack lesbian who came out at just 16 and was shortly after disowned by her adoptive family. Now a selfless server at age 23, she still lived in fear of her true self. Her wardrobe was nearly non-existent and her understanding of herself and the family that surrounds her was messy.
Jess has an incredibly sad past and a transformation that tugs at the heartstrings. With a little help from the Fab Five, she emerged as the beautiful, strong, charismatic woman that she always was inside. Her home was a reflection of her, instead of an afterthought. She finally found a support network and reconnected with family while learning how to trust again. What a queen!
'Without Further Ado' (Season 4, Episode 1)
In this episode, the gang takes us back to Jonathan's hometown to give his old high school music teacher a makeover. Kathi Dooley was stuck in the past, and even had a mullet to prove it. Completely dedicated to her students, she built up the music program at the high school and spent all her time working on it. She was in serious need of a lesson in self-care!
By the time the group arrived, they were ready to dedicate themselves to getting Kathi into mint condition to be honored as the Grand Marshal of her own parade at the music program's yearly fundraiser. At the end of their time with Kathi, it was evident that the Fab Five gave Kathi the pride and ability to care for herself while still caring for others. This hard-working woman learned that she couldn't give her students what they need if she's not taking care of herself.
'Groomer Has It' (Season 5, Episode 2)
The most recent season of Queer Eye introduced us to Rahanna. A small business owner and dog groomer, Rahanna "adds swag to your wag" with her colorful puppy haircuts. Nominated by her parents, the successful dog groomer was having trouble with her mobile business, Stylish Pooch. Although she had big dreams, the old RV she purchased to make her grooming operation mobile broke down, leaving her business stuck in front of her parent's house.
The team did an amazing job by completely reinventing Stylish Pooch. In addition, they all gave Rahanna advice on how to transform both herself and her struggling relationship. At the end of their time with Rahanna, the Fab Five celebrated this queen with a doggy fashion show to kick off her new brand and gifted her with a new mobile dog grooming van. With her newfound confidence, her relationship on the mend, and her business back to normal, Rahanna was on her way to a brand new life by the end of this episoe.
Honorable Mentions
There were so many marvelous people in the first five seasons of Queer Eye that it would be impossible not to include a few honorable mentions. Season 3, episode 1, "Hunter to Huntee," introduced us to Jody, a backwoods-loving, camo-wearing woman who was in dire need of a sense of feminine style. Another journey in season 2, episode 5, "Sky's the Limit," focuses on Skyler, a transgender man looking to rediscover himself after surgery while giving thanks to all of his supporters. Last but not least, season 3, episode 3 revolved around sisters Deborah and Mary, who struggled to keep their popular restaurant afloat on their own.
Each of these note-worthy episodes represents how the Fab Five have a magical way of working with people. Not only do they give their heroes stellar places to live and work in and new looks on the outside, but they also truly focus on the inside and what makes a person special. They take their makeovers to the next level by helping to fix people at the root of their soul. By watching just one episode of Queer Eye, you can see for yourself how special this group really is.
