Netflix drops the Queer Eye season 4 trailer and it features the show’s grooming expert Jonathan Van Ness returning to his old high school. Since Queer Eye’s 2018 debut, it’s established itself as one Netflix’s best-loved shows thanks to its heartwarming, feel-good vibe. A reboot of the 2003 Bravo series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the show sees Van Ness and his co-hosts - Antoni Porowski (food and wine), Bobby Berk (interior design), Karamo Brown (culture) and Tan France (fashion) - give people full-life makeovers alongside a much-needed confidence boost.
Within the span of its first three seasons, Queer Eye has won a handful of awards including three Primetime Emmys and a GLAAD Media Award. That success no doubt led to Netflix confirming last month that it had renewed Queer Eye for seasons 4 and 5. Netflix also confirmed that - like last season - season 4 would be based in Kansas City and would premiere globally on July 19.
Judging by the Queer Eye season 4 trailer Netflix just released, it looks like the Fab Five will be making a detour to Van Ness’s hometown of Quincy, Illinois for an episode featuring his high school orchestra teacher Kathi. Queer Eye fans might want to keep a few tissues handy for this episode because the reunion between Van Ness and his former teacher looks like a particularly emotional one as he tells her, “You’ve literally saved people’s lives. Mine included.” In keeping with the high school theme, the trailer features a bonus shot at the end of culture expert Brown doing a triumphant fist pump in the style of John Bender during the closing scene of The Breakfast Club. Check out the trailer below.
Alongside Van Ness’s former teacher, the trailer also includes snippets of the other people - affectionately referred to as ‘heroes’ by the Fab Five - who’ll be getting life makeovers in season 4. Among the heroes featured are a man who, in his own words, has never had a conversation with a gay person before and a woman who hasn’t changed her makeup or hairstyle since the 1990s. And as per usual, the Fab Five look like they’ll be transforming every hero’s life for the better.
The future looks bright for the Fab Five themselves too. Queer Eye season 5 is set to start production later this month and the stars have also filmed a four-episode special called Queer Eye: We’re in Japan! that’s set to air sometime this year. In the meantime - if the show’s July premiere feels too far away - you can get your Fab Five fix by watching the guys give a shelter puppy a ridiculously cute makeover.
Queer Eye season 4 premieres Friday July 19 on Netflix.
