The Quarry has been released by Supermassive Games, the developers of Until Dawn, and it brings with it a new set of terrible deaths for its characters. The interactive, choice-based, setup of The Quarry means that the lives of the characters are in the hands of the players. Depending on the choices the player makes, this could either be a very good thing or a very bad thing. As the director, players are free to try and help all the protagonists survive their night of carnage, or be particularly malicious and push them into tragedy.

The Quarry is the latest survival-horror game from Supermassive Games. The camp counselors of Hackett's Quarry are having one final night at camp at the end of summer before their jobs as counselors officially come to an end for the season. What the counselors think will be a relaxing night with their friends before the start of a new school year turns into a nightmare that some of them never escape depending on the choices the player makes. Though it lacks online multiplayer at launch, The Quarry has a single-player story with plenty of endings to pass the time, and players are able to link up with up to eight friends via local play in the meantime.

The main monster threats of The Quarry are werewolves, a classic horror option. Like in Until Dawn, The Quarry's characters can die in multiple ways, some of which are worse than others. Additionally, characters can end up turning into werewolves themselves. Once again, the player's objective is to keep characters alive until dawn, when the full moon is over and the werewolf threat has ended. However, even if the deaths aren't as gruesome as in Until Dawn, some of them have a greater impact due to the circumstances and emotional impact on the characters.

The Worst Deaths In The Quarry - Travis Gets Beheaded

Travis-Beheaded-While-Driving

Players don't need to play Until Dawn before playing The Quarry, but some of the deaths are reminiscent of Supermassive's PlayStation exclusive. One way that Travis can die is through beheading, which isn't uncommon in either game. However, Travis' beheading is especially brutal because he's driving at the time, and he isn't given a quick, clean cut. Instead, a werewolf pulls his head off. No matter how quickly the werewolf beheads him, it remains a painful death.

Worst The Quarry Deaths - Kaitlyn Becomes A Werewolf Meal

This death is rather avoidable in comparison to other character deaths in The Quarry. Kaitlyn at this point in the game has a gun, so it requires the player to miss shooting the werewolf. In this case, the werewolf will hook its claws under Kaitlyn's jaw and lift her from the ground. This is a slow death for Kaitlyn, as players will hear her gurgling as the camera shows her struggling to find ground with her feet in the air. If that isn't bad enough, the werewolf then feasts on Kaitlyn's body, starting at her stomach.

Though Kaitlyn can face another unpleasant death by being crushed in the scrapyard, another from her total of five possible deaths, players can use The Quarry's movie mode to avoid making game choices under pressure. This mode lets players decide beforehand which characters they want to live, and which characters they want to see brutally killed. Then, after their decisions are made, players can sit back and watch the game play out as a movie.

Dylan Can Get Dismembered To Death In The Quarry

If players make choices that lead to Dylan dying in the scrapyard, his death isn't very clean or quick. Instead of going straight for his throat, the werewolf rips off Dylan's arms first. This would have given him an added feeling of helplessness, no longer being able to defend himself even if he wanted to. The Quarry's tone is lighter than Until Dawn, but there are still moments that showcase the horrors that the characters are dealing with in their struggle to survive until morning comes.

The Worst Deaths In The Quarry - Bobby Dies In A Family Feud

Bobby's death is worse than Dylan's in The Quarry in that defending himself means killing his brother. Yet if he avoids killing his brother, he is the one killed. The manner of dying for Bobby is, of course, unpleasant in its own right, but the fact that it's his brother who rips his throat out adds an emotional layer to his death. In this situation, there isn't a real winning outcome because it ends in the death of at least one brother.

The Quarry's Worst Deaths - Abigail Is Killed By Her Crush

Abigail-Decapitation-Death

Like Bobby's death, Abigail's death has more of an emotional element to it. Like many horror films that inspired The Quarry, there is the chance for teen love to go horribly wrong. Depending on the choices of the player, Nick is either Abigail's crush or romantic interest. But Nick getting infected and turning into a werewolf puts Abigail in a difficult situation. Her first choice is to shoot Nick as he's transforming, which brings with it the emotional toll of shooting the boy she likes.

Alternatively, Abigail can choose to not shoot Nick, which will lead to her own death. Nick will throw Abigail away, and then proceed to pick her up and slam her against the wall before he decapitates her by biting her head off. If Abigail is unable to hurt Nick as he transforms, it costs her her life. Not only is she hurt before he rips her head off, but she's killed by the boy that she likes. Teenager or not, there's an added layer of pain involved in being killed by somebody she cares about.

The Quarry has a lot of endings - 186 of them, to be exact. There are multiple ways for characters to die throughout the game, and some of the characters can be infected and become werewolves themselves. Supermassive Games has finally followed up its hit game, Until Dawn, with a new game that includes some of the most classic horror tropes from movies, even taking place at a summer camp. With a lighter tone and more elements of slasher films, fans are left wondering if Supermassive Games will continue on a more classic horror path or return to a supernatural style after The Quarry.
