Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is close to hitting a negative Marvel Cinematic Universe milestone: becoming the lowest rated MCU movie on Rotten Tomatoes. The Paul Rudd-starrer shares the bottom of the MCU with the extremely divisive Eternals, according to popular review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. However, the recently premiered Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has failed to endear itself to critics and is close to taking Eternals' spot.

On Rotten Tomatoes, at the time of writing, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has a 48 percent score — one above Eternals, which finalized at 47 percent. Those scores meant both movie secured the website's "rotten" label, which is given to a film with generally unfavorable reviews. The downward Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania trend with critics is signaling it might end up alone at the bottom of the MCU soon in terms of Rotten Tomatoes scores, since it's already dropped from 52 percent.

Is Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Really That Bad?

Scott Lang and Kang the Conqueror face off--against a rotten tomatoes score

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is bigger than the previous two installments in the Ant-Man franchise, giving Rudd's Scott Lang his most challenging fight yet. The movie marks the MCU debut of Jonathan Majors' Kang The Conqueror, who is easily the highlight of the film. Critic consensus states that Kang is the standout character of the movie but Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania seems more interested in setting up the villain's future in the MCU than properly developing a conflict between Kang and Ant-Man. Another major point explains the shockingly bad scores Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has received from critics.

A kind of MCU fatigue has set in following a very bumpy Phase 4. While most reviews saw the MCU in a positive light in the past, Phase 4 has featured a slew of divisive movies and TV shows that have perhaps turned the tide against the franchise somewhat. Eternals was the first major MCU release to get predominantly bad reviews and that movie shares a key aspect with the new Ant-Man: dialogue filled with exposition. Despite Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's choice of Kang as the villain, he could have been handled better.

Majors excels as Kang, however, his story relies too much on exposition and telling the audience rather than showing. Still, even with some faults, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is an enjoyable movie, which is reflected in its 84 percent audience score. While not among the best the MCU has to offer, it is nowhere as bad as Thor: The Dark World and should not prove as divisive as Eternals has among the MCU viewers. In the end, critics are right to point out Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's failed potential — like Eternals — but the Ant-Man movie being the lowest scored in the MCU would be shocking.
