This article contains spoilers for Quantum Leap episode 9.NBC's Quantum Leap relaunch just tricked viewers - in the best possible way. Nostalgia is all the rage in popular culture, but NBC's Quantum Leap series is more than simply a rinse-and-repeat of the classic series. The basic premise is the same - a scientist who stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator has been lost in time, leaping from body to body, tasked with correcting the mistakes of history. Unlike the original series, though, there's an ongoing narrative, a mystery to be solved. Ben Song was acting without authorization when he began his leaps, and Quantum Leap's midseason finale revealed that purpose at last; Ben is actually attempting to reach the future, having somehow become aware of the impending death of his fiancée Addison.

This is the first time Quantum Leap's time travel has been used to give a glimpse of the future, rather than the past. Ben's foreknowledge is still something of a mystery, but it's reasonable to assume he learned of Addison's fate from an encounter with another leaper; the show has already introduced a leaper from the future, and he could well have crossed Ben's path somehow, precipitating te whole chain of events. Naturally, viewers are eager to learn more about this mystery leaper.

Quantum Leap Season 1 Returned With Classic Misdirection

Quantum Leap Ben, Carly and Addison

NBC's Quantum Leap series returned on January 2, with an episode that bore the title "Fellow Travelers." It felt like a hint Ben would encounter these mysterious leapers again, hopefully learning more about them. In reality, though, the episode title referred to fellow travelers on the journey of life - specifically to a singer named Carly who had left her old life behind her, and was striving to reconnect with her loved ones. Her story paralleled Ben's in a fascinating way, helping him reconcile himself with Addison in the wake of the midseason finale's revelations. The episode title was purely misdirection - but it worked in the best possible way. The writers have understood that the mystery wil draw viewers in, but the character arcs are what will make them care. Rather than focus on lore, "Fellow Travelers" focuses on Quantum Leap's characters.

Quantum Leap Does Still Progress The Mystery - In A Very Different Way

Quantum Leap Jenn and Janice

This isn't to say "Fellow Travelers" ignores the series arc, of course. Rather, that story continues in a more unlikely way, as the Quantum Leap project's head of digital security, Jenn Chou, finally manages to track down Ben's accomplice, Janice Calavicci. Janice points out a subtle detail the project team haven't really thought about - the fact Ben evidently decided not to trust any of his colleagues with his future knowledge. The implication, Janice suggested, is that somebody at Quantum Leap will be responsible for the tragedy to come. Quantum Leap episode 9 ends with Janice under arrest at last, but it's likely to be yet more misdirection, with Jenn and Janice now working together to learn the truth.

It surely won't be long before Quantum Leap reveals the truth about Ben's mission. But NBC has already renewed the show for a second season, meaning Ben and Addison's adventures are certain to continue even when all the mysteries have been solved. That, fundamentally, is what makes Quantum Leap episode 9 such a smart piece of writing; it will still matter even when this season has wrapped up, because it is a vital moment in the character arcs.

Episodes of Quantum Leap release on NBC on Mondays at 10 PM ET. Episodes are available for exclusive streaming on Peacock the next day.
