Showrunner Steve Lightfoot discusses the potential for season 2 of The Punisher. Marvel and Netflix have just launched their sixth series together, but one that is far different than the ones that came before. The Punisher makes the first (and possibly last) spinoff series to come to Netflix. Jon Bernthal debuted as Frank Castle in season two of Daredevil and the response was so overwhelmingly positive, that both companies reworked their deal to give the anti-hero his own show.
The time has now arrived where The Punisher is available to binge, and while everyone binges at their own pace, there are surely some that have already completed the thirteen episode first season. The season finale sets things in motion for more of Frank Castle and his world's story, and the showrunner is now discussing the possibility.
Lightfoot spoke to EW about the chances of a second season for The Punisher. He may have no word already if a second season is coming, but he's hopeful the announcement will come, and would be excited to jump back into Frank Castle's story.
No, I genuinely don’t know how the Netflix system works with making those calls, and I assume once they do [make a call] they’ll tell Marvel and Marvel will tell me and we’ll jump back to it. But I’m very excited to do so. I think we left both Frank and Billy in places where there are so many ways to jump off from if that second season comes. We can do anything with them, in truth.
It shouldn't come as a surprise that Lightfoot is in the dark about a possible second season, but it is good to know he'd want to return if it is announced. Netflix tends to renew their hit series a few weeks after they launch, so any announcement of a renewal may have to wait a while. If it is announced, it will add to Netflix's growing list of upcoming Marvel properties since new seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist on the way.
Lightfoot also specifically mentions the way the finale sets things in motion for Frank moving forward, but also for Billy Russo (Ben Barnes). As is the case for most of the Marvel series, a second season could also keep many of the other side characters around. Characters like Dinah Madani (Amber Rose Revah), Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), and Micro (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) could all factor into a second season, but Franke's world would also surely expand. Whether or not a continuation would include the appearance of other Marvel characters remains to be seen, there's plenty of options for a second season. Based on the reviews the show has received, it should have a decent shot at a renewal and guarantee more of Bernthal in the role.
The Punisher season 1 is available in its entirety on Netflix. New seasons of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Daredevil arrive in 2018. The premiere date for the new season of Iron Fist has yet to be announced.
