Marvel's The Punisher season 2 unveils a teaser trailer in which Netflix confirms the show's January premiere date. The Punisher acts as a spinoff from the rest of Netflix's corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe - which included Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders. Jon Bernthal debuted as Frank Castle in season 2 of Daredevil, where he was an antagonist to the show's hero, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox). However, the portrayal of the character and the popularity of the Marvel Comics vigilante prompted Netflix to order The Punisher as a spinoff. Season 1 debuted in late 2017 to largely positive reviews from critics and fans.
Now, though Netflix seems to be culling the majority of its Marvel offerings - cancelling Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Daredevil over the course of a few months - The Punisher returns for season 2 this month. The story picks up after season 1, which ended with a confrontation between Frank and his former best friend Billy Russo (Ben Barnes), who had a hand in the murders of Frank's family. At the end of season 1, Frank left Billy broken and seemingly hung up his Punisher vest, taking a pardon for the crimes he committed thanks to his friend at Homeland Security, Dinah Madani (Amber Rose Revah). However, since Frank didn't kill Billy, it looks like the two are on a collision course to once again face off in season 2 - and the pair are the focus of the latest Punisher teaser trailer.
Netflix unveiled the new teaser trailer for The Punisher season 2, which features snippets of dialogue from Frank and Billy offering fans insight into where each character stands this year. The video concludes by confirming the show will return on Friday, Jan. 18. Watch The Punisher season 2 teaser trailer and date annoucement below.
In the video, viewers get an idea of what to expect from Frank and Billy's character arcs in season 2. For his part, Billy's mind is seemingly broken after his run-in with Frank in The Punisher season 1 finale. In the season 2 teaser, Billy says, "It’s like a bomb went off inside my mind, scattering all the pieces." Based on Screen Rant's set visit, we know Billy Russo becomes the Marvel villain Jigsaw - sort of. Barnes said his mind will be the jigsaw in season 2 as he tries to put the pieces of himself back together after the trauma of his run-in with Frank.
Then there's Frank himself, who in the video says, "You need to let me be what I’m meant to be. I’m not the one who dies, I’m the one who does the killing." What Frank does as the Punisher has always been at odds with those who care about him, especially, in the past, Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), who's set to return in season 2. But what situation Frank's referring to and who he means to kill aren't clear. He may be going after Billy, to finish what he started, or he may be referring to the new villain in The Punisher, John Pilgrim (Josh Stewart), who we know very little about aside from he's a religious man.
Although this Punisher teaser trailer doesn't reveal too much about season 2, at least fans know they won't have to wait long to watch the further adventures of Frank Castle. With the show returning on Jan. 18, fans have only a little more than two weeks until The Punisher is officially back.
The Punisher season 2 premieres Friday, January 18th on Netflix.
