Punisher Season 2 Set Photos Commemorate Start of Filming

Marvel Shows The Punisher

New fan photos of The Punisher star Jon Bernthal in New York offer proof that season 2 of the Netflix series is officially underway. TV viewers were first introduced to the ultra-violent Frank Castle (Bernthal) in season 2 of Marvel's hit show Daredevil, where his more lethal form of justice put him at odds with the devil-horned hero otherwise known as Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox). Frank's tragic backstory and unfulfilled vengeance offered enough material for his own series, which debuted last year. Netflix was so confident in the appeal of their brooding antihero that they renewed The Punisher for season 2, barely a month after the first season aired.

The Punisher's solo outing followed the vigilante as he worked with a former - and presumed dead - NSA analyst (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and a Homeland Security agent (Amber Rose Revah) to uncover a vast military conspiracy that had ultimately led to his family's death. The series maintained its strong connection to Daredevil by also reuniting Frank with Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), further developing their complex relationship with each other and the violence that perpetually surrounds them.

It was expected that filming for season 2 would begin in late February and continue through July of this year. Things appear to be on schedule, judging by fan Scott Schmeizer's Facebook photos of Bernthal on location in New York, which you can see below. It looks like business as usual for The Punisher, as the actor's "bloodied" face indicates.

Further comments on the post explain that Bernthal was taking part in a scene that involves a bar brawl and a shoot-out. The real-life bar where filming took place is located in Bellmore, a neighborhood in Nassau County on Long Island. It sounds like more scenes will be filmed in the area in the coming week. While this also confirms early reports that The Punisher season 2 would take place in New York, some recent casting news means the actors and crew may eventually be headed to a small Ohio town - or whatever location will stand-in for that Midwest vibe.

Information about the storyline of the upcoming episodes is so far pretty thin. The addition of character Amy Bendix (Giorgia Whigham) and that alternate locale suggests some parallels to the "Suicide Run" comic arc, which sees Frank once again near death due to his violent tactics, and recovering incognito under the suspicious eye of a small-town sheriff. That storyline also includes a wave of new dangerous vigilantes in New York, so Bernthal may get his wish to have Daredevil and Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) appear in The Punisher season 2.

The early set photos show that there's likely to be plenty of the explosive action that The Punisher is known for. Hopefully the addition of a psychotherapist specializing in military veterans means the series will continue to address Castle's trauma and the way he's chosen to deal with it. The Marvel hero shows on Netflix have excelled at creating very complex and human portraits of people doing superhuman things, and season 2 of The Punisher should continue that trend. Fans may have to wait awhile, however, as the series likely won't debut until after all of The Defenders have aired new individual seasons.
