A new report claims season 2 of The Punisher will keep production of the Marvel/Netflix show in New York. While the debut season of The Punisher felt disconnected from the MCU, that sense of isolation helped the series to feel very different from Marvel's other offerings. While the Netflix shows from the studio have always been darker and bolder than other superhero series, The Punisher had the benefit of a singular narrative and didn't bother tying into a larger world. But with Frank Castle's profile constantly growing, can he continue to operate in the shadows?
New York is jam-packed with vigilantes in the comics, and it looks as if the MCU is following that model. When we last left The Punisher, he kicked off the origin of Jigsaw and managed to have all of his misdeeds wiped clean under one condition: he stays put in New York City. With season 2 of The Punisher officially happening, many have wondered if Frank's story would take him to a new location to exact his brand of justice. For now though, it looks as if he's sticking to his home turf.
Omega Underground is reporting that season 2 of The Punisher will continue to shoot under the working title 'Crime' and remain in New York City. The site also believes the show will begin production later this year, though that's still up in the air. Still, it makes sense given how quickly new seasons of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Daredevil are turning around.
The decision to stay in NYC makes a certain amount of sense given how season 1 of The Punisher ended, but it's hard not to argue that Frank will have trouble avoiding the law given how conspicuous he is. It already strained credulity that Micro's family didn't recognize the high-profile serial killer who was only recently part of a massive trial in their own city. There's also the issue of NYC becoming a stale location with so many Marvel shows taking place there. Even with a wide world at Marvel's disposal, they seem to be falling in line with decades of comic precedent.
It's possible that keeping The Punisher in NYC has a logistic purpose. The original slate of Netflix shows for Marvel Studios were part of a tax deal with the city of New York, and something similar could be in the works still. There's also a chance that production will move elsewhere after kicking off in New York. We could see The Punisher season 2 start with Frank effectively staying home before his next mission brings him elsewhere.
Of course, it could be that the new season of The Punisher will be more integrated with the other Netflix shows. While the solo series worked well on its own, Frank also shone when paired with Matt Murdock. With The Kingpin coming out of jail, we could see the worlds of Punisher and Daredevil reintegrate for season 2.
The Punisher season 2 is expected to debut in 2019 on Netflix.
