Punisher's return in Daredevil: Born Again pays off a seven-year-old Marvel Cinematic Universe team-up tease. Once Charlie Cox's Daredevil and Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin returned in Marvel Studios projects, hope began to rise that others from the Netflix shows could do the same. The confirmation that Daredevil: Born Again was happening on Disney+ only increased the desire to see other familiar faces. It has now been revealed that Jon Bernthal's Punisher is returning to play a role in Marvel's Daredevil reboot.

The chance to see Jon Bernthal's Punisher and Charlie Cox's Daredevil together again comes after they first shared the screen in Daredevil season 2. While the two Marvel heroes were originally pitted against each other, they ultimately found a way to work together. Considering the rapturous response to Punisher's debut and the continued success of Daredevil, it was expected that this would be the first of many times that the two characters would interact. Even as Bernthal went on to star in The Punisher spinoff, Marvel Studios is now responsible for another team-up. Daredevil: Born Again pays off a big Netflix tease in the process.

Daredevil: Born Again bringing back Punisher means his Daredevil team-up tease from Daredevil season 2 will finally happen. After Punisher lends a hand in taking out The Hand and protecting Daredevil, the finale makes Frank Castle's final line, "See you around, Red." The line - which was delivered nearly seven years ago to the date that Bernthal's return was announced - was a clear tease from the Netflix shows that the two characters would team up again in the future. Punisher's MCU return in Daredevil: Born Again is now where this will happen, even if the show portrays them as variants.

It is fairly surprising that the Netflix Marvel shows never found a way to have Punisher and Daredevil team up again after Daredevil season 2. Netflix made Daredevil season 3, two seasons of The Punisher, and The Defenders crossover after this Punisher tease. Despite both characters appearing multiple times and some Daredevil characters being in The Punisher, the crossover never happened. It left season 2 as the only time Bernthal and Cox got to work together, but now Daredevil: Born Again will change that.

What Punisher's Role In Daredevil: Born Again Could Be

The extent of Punisher's role in Daredevil: Born Again has not been revealed at this point. According to some reports, Matt Murdock is looking for Frank during Echo, the Hawkeye spinoff show that will help set up Daredevil: Born Again. If this is true, it signals that Punisher and Daredevil meeting up again in the MCU will not be a coincidence. There is something that is bringing the two characters back together, which should eliminate the possibility that Punisher will be a villain in Daredevil: Born Again.

It would appear that Punisher's MCU return in Daredevil: Born Again will be about him working with Matt to fight Kingpin. Frank has a history with Wilson Fisk, as the mob boss wanted the hitman to take out the other criminal empires in New York so the Kingpin could rise to power. If Daredevil: Born Again adapts the comic story where Wilson Fisk becomes the mayor of New York, that could require Punisher and Daredevil to team up to try and take him down for good.
