PUBG Studio, developer of beloved battle royale PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, is looking for workers, and its latest job postings point towards a sci-fi shooter being one of its upcoming projects. The staggering success of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has given PUBG Studio plenty of financial ground to stand on. So far, it has used that ground to build up projects like PUBG: New State.

Despite contending with a multitude of free battle-royale games, PUBG has managed to develop its own identity and sell more than 70 million copies, making it the fifth best-selling game of all time. Even this sells the game short, though. Worldwide, PUBG Mobile has more than 1 billion downloads and has made the studio well over $1 billion. Since its initial release in 2017, the game has received a lot of the credit for establishing the battle-royale genre in gaming. While it’s far from the first battle-royale game, there’s no denying that it’s largely responsible for the way it blew up in the industry.

However, if news of this sci-fi title is correct, PUBG Studio will likely be “shedding [PUBG’s] battle royale game roots,” according to PCGamesN. This new sci-fi title, deemed “Project: Vertical,” was first speculated by PlayerIGN, a PUBG leaker, via a YouTube video they posted on Sunday. According to the leak, “Project: Vertical” will be an “open world, shooting, and action game in the sci-fi genre.” Other important keywords that PlayerIGN managed to find were “cyborgs, robots, guns, mechas/EXO-suits, vehicles, monsters, tribes, villages, and cities.” “Project: Vertical” is also supposedly being developed using Unreal Engine 4.

PlayerIGN has a considerable history with PUBG and dedicates their YouTube channel to PUBG news, leaks, and speculations. So far, PlayerIGN has managed to correctly predict and leak PUBG: New State a year before its official announcement and the PUBG Vikendi patch several months before its release. They also brought a PUBG sequel to the minds of the public. In fact, in their latest video, they even speculate that “Project: Vertical” may in fact be the sequel to PUBG. Other connections are also made to The Callisto Protocol, an upcoming survival horror game set in the world of PUBG.

This serves as particularly exciting news out of PUBG Studio after its more recent headlines. In March, it was announced that PUBG Lite, the low-end version of PUBG Mobile, would shut down towards the end of April. There have also been concerns about PUBG’s player counts in recent months. However, “Project: Vertical” gives the game and its studio a bit of a spark. If these leaks prove to be true, then there’s plenty more to look forward to from PUBG studio and potentially the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds franchise.
