A friend of Double Fine and legendary comedic actor Jack Black is featured as the vocalist for the Psychonauts 2 theme song. A new cinematic/gameplay trailer was debuted during the Xbox Games Showcase that featured footage of Jack Black in the record student alongside the head of Double Fine, Tim Schaffer. While fans of the cult classic game were given a new look at one of the minds of Psychonauts 2, they still weren't given a release date.
Psychonauts 2 is the sequel to the 2005 cult-classic original, and the third title in the Psychonauts series. What seemed like a fantasy became a reality after Double Fine raised $3.8 million through a crowdfunding website called Fig in 2016. The first trailer for Psychonauts 2 was dropped during the Xbox showcase at E3 2019 after it was announced that Microsoft had bought Double Fine. Since then, the release date for Psychonauts 2 has been rather elusive.
The new trailer shows gameplay from a world seemingly inspired by music and conspiracies. It also gave a look at some of the revamped enemies and objects that were iconic in the original Psychonauts. The song sang by Jack Black is titles "Mote of Light." The trailer also features a new psychic ability that slows objects down allowing Razputin to traverse levels more easily. The trailer ended with a splash screen of the Psychonauts 2 logo but did not feature a release date or time frame.
Double Fine posted a tweet shortly after the Xbox Games Showcase stating that Psychonauts 2 would be coming next year. This came as a shock as many Psychonauts fans had expected the game to release sometime in 2020. However, it also stated that Jack Black would not only appear as a vocalist for the game's soundtrack but would also voice a character known only as "The Mysterious Stanger." The character Black plays is presumably the one-eyed man in the new musical trailer.
Although the release date seems far away, it was refreshing to see some new gameplay from Psychonauts 2. The world showcased also gives confidence that the worlds in Psychonauts 2 will be just as wonderful and wacky as they were in the original game. Here's hoping that Psychonauts 2 has even more groovy musical numbers featuring the voice of Jack Black.
Psychonauts 2 is set to launch on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
