There are tons of abilities in Psychonauts 2, but a handful will benefit the player in the early game. The ability to upgrade Raz's powers is new to this entry of the series. While players will want to focus on upgrading them all so Raz can defeat enemies and platform effortlessly later, there are a few upgrades that they will want to dedicate their intern points toward first.

Intern Points in Psychonauts 2 function as a currency on a skill tree, allowing Raz to upgrade his new powers to stronger versions. Players can unlock more intern points by collecting PSI Challenge Markers, Figments, Emotional Baggage, and PSI Challenge Cards.

Before doing any of that, players will want to focus on getting the Psitanium wallet upgrade first. Players can do this by visiting Otto's Shop. The basic wallet only allows players to carry 100 Psitanium at a time. For 75 Psitanium, players can upgrade this, allowing players to go from carrying 100 to 1,000 Psitanium at a time. There is a second upgrade that will cost the player 750 Psitanium that brings the total count to 5,000, which is perfect for purchasing pins to customize Raz's psychic powers.

The main abilities players will want to upgrade first are Levitation, Mental Connection, and Pyrokinesis. Players will unlock these abilities naturally throughout the story of Psychonauts 2, and they have the most applicable uses in the game. Their upgrades will help Raz explore every level thoroughly.

Upgrading Levitation to its third tier will unlock Bouncy Ball. Raz can charge Bouncy Ball to receive a higher jump. As Psychonauts 2 is a 3D platformer, being able to reach higher ledges is the first way for players to unlock those hidden collectibles.

Next, players will want to get Mental Connection up to the tier where it unlocked Dark Thoughts. This can be unlocked once Raz reaches a level 30 Cadet rank. It allows Raz to connect to specific nodes within certain minds, unlocking new areas within levels he has already visited. This is mandatory for players looking to 100% the game by grabbing every collectible available.

The last of the priority upgrades is the Psi-Power Pyrokinesis. In its initial form, it only throws a small bubble to attack enemies, which is somewhat ineffective. Once the player upgrades it enough, it will turn into a massive ball of fire that is perfect for clearing out tons of enemies at once during critical combat moments.
