There’s some good news and some bad news for all they Psychos out there: USA is working on a sequel to last years’s Psych: The Movie, but the project probably won’t be happening as soon as fans (or the network) would like. The TV movie became a bright spot on USA’s late 2017 programming slate, earning high marks from critics who, for the most part, saw it as a sign that the entertainment industry’s emphasis on reboots and revivals maybe wasn’t so bad. In other words: if a TV show is going to come back, it might as well come back like Psych

So, naturally, USA was eager to strike while the revival iron was hot, in the hopes of delivering another Psych movie sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, those hopes were more or less dashed (temporarily) on account of series stars James Roday and Dule Hill being busy working actors. That’s right, the planned follow-up, or Psych: The Sequel, as it has been unofficially dubbed, will have to wait while Roday and Hill finish up what they’re currently working on.

As reported by TVLine, USA was hoping to get the cast in front of cameras later this year, but with Roday taking a lead role in ABC’s upcoming This is Us-style relationship drama A Million Little Things and Hill being upped to series regular on USA’s long-running (and now Meghan Markle and Patrick J. Adams-less) Suits, the sequel will have to wait.

Though that may not be the news Psychos want to hear, at least it sounds as though the only thing holding the sequel back is scheduling. In fact, the report goes on to say that USA is still interested in making the movie, provided Roday and Hill’s schedules open up enough to accommodate it. Whether or not that means USA is only looking for a window in 2018 or if the powers that be there are willing to wait until 2019 isn’t yet known.

Thankfully, while fans are waiting for another mystery for Shawn and Gus to solve — one that will hopefully resolve the tricky situation they found themselves in, along with John Cena’s Ewan O’Hara, at the end of the first film — the original series is still available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. And, as mentioned above, both Roday and Hill can be seen in their new series later this year.
