After eight seasons of having Gus (Dulé Hill) be compared to Bud from The Cosby Show, Psych found a way to pay off this long-running joke. Many characters on the show thought Burton “Gus” Guster closely resembled The Cosby Show’s Bud, played by Deon Richmond. Bud, a school classmate and friend of Rudy’s, was a recurring character who made frequent visits to the Huxtable household and often annoyed Rudy.

Bud was referenced multiple times on Psych, but always for the same reason: it was said that he and Gus looked alike. This was one of several jokes that Psych ended up turning into a running gag. After Shawn actor James Roday Rodriguez ad-libbed a scene and gave Gus a fake nickname, it became something viewers expected every time an introduction was in order. Shawn and Gus also had a tendency to reuse the same lines, such “wait for it”, “suck it”, and “c’mon son!”, the latter of which they got from Ed Lover. The Bud jokes were no different. It started in season 1 when Shawn told a character that Gus played Bud on The Cosby Show, a lie which Gus was quick to deny. Right away, others noticed the physical similarities and the joke was carried on from there in later episodes.

Psych finally paid off this joke in the series finale when Gus is shown working at his new job. In one scene, Gus is speaking with his boss, Mr. Richmond, and realizes during the conversation that the two have a few things in common. At the end of their talk, Mr. Richmond pats Gus on the shoulder and calls him “Bud”. Gus starts to respond, but stops himself. To those who may not have recognized the actor playing Mr. Richmond, the point of this scene could easily have been missed, but many did note that Gus’ new boss is played by Deon Richmond himself, the actor who actually played The Cosby Show character.

Psych’s Deon Richmond cameo served as a fun Easter egg that tied in to one of the show’s most popular running jokes. The comparisons have prompted a lot of laughs over the years, with one of the most memorable uses of it happening in season 6’s Bachelorette-themed episode, “Shawn and the Real Girl”. After going on a reality dating show, Gus tries to win over Melinda (Lindsey Sloane), who says later that instead of being attracted to Gus, he just makes her think of Bud from The Cosby Show.

Interestingly, the inclusion of Deon Richmond as Gus’ boss wasn’t the only Psych gag that was paid off by a shocking cameo in the series finale. Psych revealed that the frequently mentioned – but never seen – Detective Dobson is played by Val Kilmer, an actor who Shawn has talked about constantly and has regarded as his hero since boyhood.
