Curt Smith has had three cameos on USA’s Psych. Curt Smith is known for being the lead singer and bass guitarist for synth pop band Tears for Fears, which was at the height of its popularity during the 1980s. With Tears for Fears, Curt Smith produced a number of memorable songs, including #1 hits like “Shout” and “Everyone Wants to Rule the World.” Other songs the English band is remembered for include “Head Over Heels,” “Break It Down Again,” and their first hit, “Mad World.”

Curt Smith made a surprising appearance in Psych season 5 when Shaun (James Roday Rodriguez) and Gus (Dule Hill) visited the home of rich criminal profiler Declan Rand (Nestor Carbonell), and found Curt Smith, who had been paid by Declan to play songs for him. Upon seeing him, Shaun immediately expressed his love for Smith and his music. At the end of the episode, an intoxicated Smith was seen performing another song at Declan’s house in what was one of the episode’s funniest moments. Smith returned in Psych’s Clue tribute as one of the guests at a rock musician’s mansion and was chased by a panther offscreen. His last cameo was in a season 8 episode, which saw Gus have a hallucination of Curt Smith turning into a zombie and attacking him.

Curt Smith has explained in the past the story of how he was added to the show in the first place. Apparently, James Roday Rodriguez made the request personally after sneaking backstage after a Tears for Fears concert in Los Angeles when security was lax. During their conversation, Rodriguez asked Smith to do a guest spot on Psych, and spoke with him more seriously about it at his house. Despite the 90-degree weather at the time, Rodriguez came to his home in a skiing jacket, which Smith found “amusing.” Smith says he ultimately agreed to be on Psych because the show’s humor and sarcasm appealed to him, and it seemed like “a good thing to do” [via MovieWeb].

According to one interview, Rodriguez acted like a “big fluttery fangirl” when talking to Smith for the first time at the concert. What makes that so humorous is that this is also an accurate description of how his character, Shaun, behaved around Curt Smith during their first meeting at Declan Rand’s house in season 5. Smith was visibly perturbed whenever Shaun would say "I love you."

Since his scenes in the season 5 episode and his interactions with Shaun were received well, it’s not surprising that the Tears for Fears singer was brought back for two more episodes. His incident with the escaped panther lurking outside the musician’s house in season 7 brought even more laughs. Curt Smith nearly returned for a fourth cameo in Psych: The Movie, but unfortunately scheduling conflicts stood in the way. However, there’s always a possibility that he could reunite with one of his biggest fans (Shaun Spencer) in Psych 3 as one of the movie's surprise cameos.
