Psych 3 should bring back Pierre Despereaux and resolve the character's big mystery from the season 8 premiere. The first Psych movie set high expectations when it came to bringing back beloved characters outside of the main cast; there were brief guest appearances from Ewan O’Hara (John Cena) and Nick Conforth (Ralph Macchio), among others. Through a twist, it revealed that one-time enemy Allison Crowley (Mena Suvari) from season 5 was the film’s real villain as well.

In comparison to its predecessor, Psych 2: Lassie Come Home was somewhat light on big cameos, but the next reunion movie could see the return of more fan-favorite characters, one of which being Pierre Despereaux. Played by Princess Bride star Cary Elwes, Despereaux has been both a friend and an enemy to Shawn (James Roday Rodriguez) and Gus (Dulé Hill) in the USA series. He was introduced in a season 4 episode as a notorious art thief that Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) was desperate to catch. Following Despereaux’s capture, he tricked Shawn and Gus into helping him escape and managed to gain Shawn’s admiration. There were even times when the two received opportunities to work alongside Despereaux (much to Gus’ chagrin).

It would be a good move for Psych 3 to reunite Shawn and Gus with Pierre Despereaux. He had an interesting personality, and his character was well-received by viewers. There’s also his unique dynamic with Shawn. Despite the fact that Despereaux was a criminal, Shawn had a lot of respect for him and thought of him as “cool”. In the episode that Despereaux faked his death, Shawn was hit hard when he had to deliver his eulogy at the funeral. His inability to accept that Despereaux was dead was a rare moment for Shawn, a character who doesn’t usually take anything seriously. With these things in mind, the writers could have fun revisiting their relationship in Psych 3. Plus, it would give them the opportunity to finally resolve Despereaux's true identity.

Psych Season 8 Pierre Desperaux

Pierre Despereaux is a character that the writers and producers already tried to bring back once, so he’s definitely someone who’s on their radar. He was originally going to be featured in Psych: The Movie, but scheduling conflicts kept Elwes from reprising his role. There was an expectation from fans that the story would resolve the Pierre Despereaux mystery created in the season 8 premiere. Shawn and Gus discovered in the episode that Despereaux secretly worked for Interpol, and was never really a bad guy in the first place. By the end of the episode, the two came to wonder if he had duped them again. The truth about his identity was never revealed since his role was cut from Psych: The Movie.

As for why he wasn’t in Psych 2: Lassie Come Home, the most likely explanation for that is the film’s focus on Lassiter. Since Despereaux doesn’t feel like a character who should only get a cameo, it’s for the best that he wasn’t in the movie. His previous appearances in Psych provide a template for how he should be used. All Psych episodes featuring Despereaux revolved around his character and whatever problem that came with him. Whenever he comes around, he has a tendency to get Shawn and Gus involved in incredibly dangerous schemes, whether it be a heist overseen by Interpol or the theft of a highly sought-after ancient dagger. The return of Pierre Despereaux could lead to an exciting new adventure for Shawn and Gus in Psych 3.
