Reportedly, the PlayStation VR 2 will support a resolution of 2000×2040 per eye, which is higher than that of the Oculus Quest 2. Sony shared official details about its next-gen PlayStation VR platform in February of this year, improvements in the field of view, input, resolution and tracking departments.

A little less than a month after those first bits of information hit the web, the hardware manufacture unveiled a look at the controllers for its next-generation VR device. Notably, Sony finally put the Move controllers out to pasture, favoring a VR controller design that adopts some of the DualSense's best features. Boasting a unique orb-like design, the left and right controllers emphasize comfort to fit a wide range of hand sizes. They also feature adaptive trigger buttons and haptic feedback. Apparently, Sony's next-gen VR controllers serve as only avenue the company will take in its attempt to outperform the competition.

In speaking with "reliable sources," UploadVR reportedly learned that PSVR 2 will reach a resolution of 4000×2040 pixels at 2000×2040 per eye. If true, this means Sony is targeting VR in 4K; comparatively, the Oculus Quest 2 is unable to accomplish as much with its pixel count of 1832×1920 per-eye resolution. The report also claims the new device will house a lens separation adjustment dial and eye-tracking with foveated rendering - a method that decreases the rendering quality beyond the player's peripheral, allowing image quality in the center of vision to appear higher. UploadVR's sources additionally divulged that a motor in the headset will let game developers to deliver haptic feedback directly.

This is no doubt a big boost compared to the original PlayStation VR's specifications. The device from 2016 came packed with a single screen that targeted 1080 x 960 pixels per eye. And the foveated rendering should especially help boost visual quality, giving the next PSVR headset a bit of an edge. There does exist one key concern, however - pricing.

While next-gen technology will certainly leave the PSVR 2 feeling like a cut above the rest, Sony may find it difficult to compete with the likes of Oculus Quest 2 in the cost department. Oculus launched the device last fall with a base model priced at $299 and a higher-end version running customers $399. Will Sony push for a higher price tag, or does the manufacturer plan on selling another PlayStation device at a loss so soon after PS5's launch? We'll have to wait and see.
