The latest PlayStation 5 system update is live, and it includes several features that Sony didn't announce beforehand. The PS5 has gained a number of new features in its new update, including the ability to store store PS5 games on external hard drives.

The new PS5 update allows for the Share Play feature to have cross-gen functionality with PS4 systems, and they can now adjust the volume of other players on their systems and disable Game Chat altogether. The Game Base menu has also seen a number of improvements, making it easier to switch between active Parties and Friends. It's also now easier to customize the library of games the player owns, especially as players can now hide games from their collection. Trophy videos now have more options, including the ability to reserve them for Gold or Platinum trophies. There are lots of new system features for the PS5, but there were some that players have discovered for themselves.

According to Reddit user findings on the dedicated PS5 subreddit, there are other options in the new PS5 system update that weren't announced by Sony. One of the biggest of these is the ability to stop HDR from being used in games that don't support it. There are also new HDMI Link options included in the update, which allow the player to select One-Touch Play (which will force the PS5 to switch on the TV it's connected to and put it on the correct channel), as well as a Power Off function.

There are also some minor adjustments to the PS5, like a new green icon that lets the player known when their DualSense controller is charging. Users are also reporting that the deletion bug has been fixed, where the PS5 uninstalls games on its own, leaving blank icons behind. There are also extra functions for players who use a PC monitor for their games, including support for 120Hz refresh rates. All told, there were a surprising number of quality-of-life improvements in the console's most substantial update to date, and players seem pleased with the changes on the whole.

The ability to use external drives with the PS5 is easily the biggest draw of the new system update, which is why Sony heavily promoted it before it went live. These unannounced updates are more technical in nature, which might be why they weren't included in the official reveal, as Sony likely wanted to focus on the more common features that larger numbers of users had been asking for. It's updates like these that prove that it's better to wait a while before purchasing a new console, as it gives the developers time to iron out any bugs. Then again, a lot of people haven't had much choice when it comes to waiting for the PS5, as it's still difficult to purchase from retailers.
