A third-party seller, cleverly named PlateStation5, is getting a jumpstart on distributing custom swappable faceplates for the upcoming PlayStation 5. Just a few weeks ago, leaked images suggested that the PS5's white outer shell may be removable, which means endless possibilities for customizing a one-of-a-kind home console. By ordering these custom plates ahead of time, players will be able to change up their next-gen console right on launch day in November.

Back in July 2020, a post on Twitter from user @Wario64 was discovered containing alleged leaked images of a PS5 being assembled in a Chinese factory. The images showed the white outer plates for the futuristic console designed with small pieces that may snap into place on the PS5. In addition to the factory photos, the tweet also included an official photo of the PS5, and the plates did seem to match. Although Sony never confirmed removable faceplates directly, Sony's VP of UX design at PlayStation, Matt MacLaurin, did previously state that the PS5 will feature brand new customizable hardware. Plus, Sony's PS5 teardown video basically confirmed that the outer panels will pop off without any screws.

As Playstationlife.net reported, PlateStation 5 put a handful of unofficial custom plates up for sale this week, making it clear on the website that these products are not associated with Sony or the PlayStation 5 brand. Players can order sleek limited edition matte black faceplates to make the new console look a bit more like its PlayStation predecessors, or brighten things up with chrome, cherry red, jungle camouflage, and indigo blue. According to PlateStation 5's website, the idea stemmed from the PlayStation community's desire to stick with the traditional all-black console design, and the company later decided to add more colors.

The faceplates are available in both the PS5 Digital Edition and Standard sizes at $39.99 per set. PlateStation 5's products can be pre-ordered now for delivery on PS5 launch day, November 12. Because the removable plates have not been officially confirmed by Sony, there's no telling if the custom plates will work with the console as desired, but PlateStation 5 offers a 10-day return policy and previously stated that it is working with manufacturers to ensure a proper fit.

PlateStation 5 is likely to be the first of many custom PS5 faceplate sellers. Gamers will truly be able to make the console their own with ease and without having to pay a too-hefty price. The addition of removable faceplates is definitely an attractive feature that will likely drive up PS5's sales, but it may impact any special-edition PS5 consoles Sony plans to release as they have in the past, such as the PlayStation 4 Pro 500 Million Edition and the Spider-Man Edition. There are certainly going to be some creative PlayStation 5 designs out there by the time November hits.
