A new leak revealed that the PS5 SSD storage true size is smaller than advertised when put into practice, and it's a fact that's upset a lot of fans ahead of launch day for the next-gen consoles next week. The PlayStation 5 remains strong in terms of sales figures, with reports suggesting it will eclipse PS4's launch week sales by quite a margin, but that doesn't mean there haven't been setbacks when it comes to general consumer sentiment ahead of the console's release.

One of the biggest ones has been simply getting a hold of the PS5, though the same is true of the Xbox Series X in that regard. Fans have been struggling to snag their own PS5 pre-orders after the first wave was delivered scattershot across several online retailers, and though there will reportedly be other next-gen pre-order chances, it remains a point of frustration for consumers who simply want to have that console at launch. That isn't to say there will be that much to do with the console on November 12 - or November 19, in some regions - as it, alongside Xbox Series X, have both been criticized for seriously lacking any major launch day titles to give early adopters a bonus for being so quick to join next-gen gaming.

One point in favor of the PlayStation - the lauded PS5 SSD - has now become another source of frustration for fans thanks to an online leak of the PS5 storage space. In a tweet from user Okami13_, pictures of a PS5 review kit with its effective storage space displayed reveal that the console has roughly 667GB in practice, far less than the advertised 825GB. The pictures also show about 20GB eaten up by Astro's Playroom, which strongly suggests that there won't be any groundbreaking file size scaling to justify having such a small SDD size.

Naturally, PS5 fans are already taking to social media to express their frustration with this development. They're generally in one of two camps: those who feel that Sony should have provided a bigger SSD to begin with, and those who feel the advertising of it should have been more honest about its effective storage space. Either way, the PS5 storage space issue looks like it will be a real one for early adopters, who may be forced into picking up an extra PlayStation 5 SSD if they're primarily going to own games digitally.

At this point, with pre-orders already in and consumers clamoring to try and get a console if they've already missed their opportunity, it doesn't seem likely that the PS5 storage size leak will change anyone's mind. People simply want to own next-gen consoles ahead of any major releases, and storage will only become an issue as libraries expand. It's still going to be an issue down the road, however, and it's another knock against Sony's console, and PS5 SSD concerns will be on the back of people's minds as next-gen file sizes begin to be standardized with upcoming launches.
